Gallico lies north of Reggio Calabria and, together with neighboring Catona, is one of the districts located by the sea. The combination of coastal character, churches, religious traditions, museums and beaches makes the area especially interesting if you would like to get to know Italy not only through its landscapes, but also through local history and living culture.
Churches and Religious History
The Chiesa di San Biagio Martire is located in Gallico Superiore. Its rectangular, single-nave body ends in a semicircular apse. Notable features include a large wall fresco of the Beatitudes and an 18th-century altarpiece depicting the Madonna and Child and San Biagio. The church thus combines a clearly recognizable architectural form with remarkable works of art.
In Gallico Marina, the Chiesa di Maria SS. di Porto Salvo was built by the faithful in 1766. On July 15, 1792, it was elevated to parish status. Also in Gallico Marina is the Chiesa di Sant’Antonio, which was the first sacred building in this district. Anyone interested in the development of religious sites and their integration into the districts will find several different historical points of reference here.
Gallico Superiore is also home to the Parco della MondialitĂ . The park was designed in 1970 by Padre Aurelio Cannizzaro. Another religious site is the sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna della Grazia, which was founded in 1960. The main festival of the Madonna della Grazia takes place on the first Saturday after August 15; it is preceded by six Saturdays in honor of the Madonna.
Museums in the Area
Several museums in the area around Gallico provide a cultural addition to your stay. These include the Museo di Biologia Marina e Paleontologia di Reggio Calabria, the Planetario provinciale Pythagoras, the Museo Nazionale Kore Biglietteria and the Museo Dello Strumento Musicale.
Beaches and Coastal Character
The beaches are also worth considering in relation to their specific locations. Spiaggia di Archi is a beach in the immediate area around Gallico. Lido Comunale Zerbi, Cala Costa Viola and Spiaggia Scilla are beaches in the surrounding area. If you would like to combine culture with days by the water during your trip, you can take these different beach destinations into account when planning your excursions.
For arriving by train, Reggio di Calabria Gallico railway station is an important practical reference point. It does not have an assistance service for people with reduced mobility.
