Santa Domenica is a small agricultural village located at about 275 metres above sea level in the Precariti Valley. Its distinctive character is shaped by the combination of a rural setting and religious significance. Lo Scoglio is the rock next to the birthplace of Fratel Cosimo and the site of the apparitions, which believers visit for prayer. The holy site was elevated to a diocesan sanctuary on 11 February 2016 under the title Nostra Signora dello Scoglio.

The area of the Madonna dello Scoglio sanctuary in Santa Domenica includes the places associated with the life and prayer of Fratel Cosimo. The Nostra Signora dello Scoglio diocesan sanctuary in Contrada Santa Domenica also contains a statue of the martyr Sant’Emidio. These religious sites give Santa Domenica a clear cultural and spiritual profile that differs from viewing the village purely in terms of its landscape.

Prayer Meetings and Recurring Events

At Scoglio Benedetto in Santa Domenica di Placanica, prayer meetings with Fratel Cosimo and priests take place on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. A special afternoon of prayer takes place on the first Saturday of every month. In addition, an international youth meeting is held once a year, usually on the first Saturday in September. At the celebration in honour of Sant’Emidio in Santa Domenica di Placanica announced for 2025, a procession with the saint’s relic and statue followed a solemn concelebration.

Beaches and Destinations in the Surrounding Area

The area around Santa Domenica includes Castello di San Fili, a castle near the village. Palazzo Carafa di Roccella Jonica, a palace, is also located in the surrounding area. Several beaches in the wider regional area connect the village with the coast: Spiaggia di Caulonia and Spiaggia di Riace are located near Santa Domenica, as is Spiaggia di Roccella Ionica.
