Seminara: Ceramic Art, Pilgrimage and Festival Culture

Seminara combines a long-standing tradition of ceramic craftsmanship with sacred art, historic sites and festivals that shape the townscape in a distinctive way. This makes it a destination where cultural history, religious heritage, local specialties and insights into traditional craftsmanship can be experienced together.

Ceramics and Museums as Part of the Town’s Character

A good starting point for exploring Seminara’s cultural history is the Museo delle Ceramiche di Calabria. It was founded in 2011 through a partnership between the Municipality of Seminara and the Centro Studi Esperide. To this day, the ceramic masters known as maestri pignatari shape clay according to old traditions to create masks, bottles, anthropomorphic vessels, amphorae, household objects and vases. In the craft workshops, the ceramic masters known as pignatàri introduce visitors to the colorful ceramic products. The old craft workshops also contain tools that were once used to make the ceramic products.

Sacred Art and Historical Heritage

The Basilica Santuario della Madonna dei Poveri preserves a wooden statue of the Madonna dei Poveri dating from the 12th century. It also contains 16th-century marble statues of Saints Peter and Paul from the Gagini school. Two exhibition areas belong to the basilica: the Tesoro della Basilica and the Sala delle Reliquie.

The Chiesetta di Sant'Antonio dei Pignatari is a rural church that was rebuilt toward the end of the 18th century. Its façade features a stone high relief of God the Father blessing, dating from the 15th century, as well as vases made of Seminara ceramics. Inside stands a 16th-century marble statue attributed to Giovan Battista Mazzolo and known as the Madonna dei Miracoli. The Chiesa di San Marco preserves a marble statue of the Madonna degli Angeli attributed to Antonello Gagini.

The imperial monastery of Sant’Elia di Enna e di San Filarete L’Ortolano in Seminara was founded around 884. At the Monastero Bizantino dei Santi Elia e Filarete, the monks celebrate services according to the Orthodox rite. Seminara is also home to four bas-reliefs that probably date from between 1550 and 1560. The remains of Castello Mezzatesta are considered to be an ancient 17th-century palace.

August Festivals, Pilgrimage and Local Cuisine

The Festa della Madonna dei Poveri takes place every year on 14 August and draws worshippers to Seminara. At the same time, Seminara has been a pilgrimage destination for almost a millennium for those visiting the Madonna dei Poveri. Between 10 and 15 August, La danza dei Giganti takes place during the Festa della Madonna dei Poveri: men carry two approximately three-metre-high papier-mâché figures through the streets and move them to the sound of drums.

The Sagra dell'olio also offers a tangible taste of the local cuisine. The tastings include zeppole, peperonata, pasta struncatura and toasted bread. A key ingredient is the olive oil produced in Seminara.

Getting There and Accommodation Guidance

You can reach Seminara by car via the A3 Salerno–Reggio Calabria motorway. Take the exit at Palmi and then continue along the Palmi–Seminara provincial road. For travel by train, a train with Palmi as its destination or a stop there is recommended; buses and shuttle services can be used from the station.
