Stignano reveals itself through its historic centre, notable churches and monastic architecture, historic buildings, and an MTB route that passes through part of the town centre. If you would like to discover Italian local history not just through a single building, but through squares, alleyways, art and architectural styles, you will find several different points of reference here.
Historic Town Centre and Vianedi
The I Portali are located in Stignano’s historic centre. The houses there are connected by stairways, arches, passageways, alleys and narrow paths known locally as Vianedi. The Casa Natale di Tommaso Campanella, the birthplace of the philosopher, theologian, poet and Dominican friar Tommaso Campanella, is also located in the borgo of the municipality of Stignano. This part of town therefore combines the small-scale structure of the historic centre with a specific connection to intellectual history.
Churches and Monastic Architecture
The Convento di Sant'Antonio was founded by the Paolotti in 1641 and has a cloister surrounded by a colonnade. The Chiesa di San Rocco is located in Piazza San Rocco in the Stignano Centro district. The Chiesa dell'Immacolata is located on Via Calvario in the Loc. Trivio district. Those who orient themselves around the town’s buildings and their different locations can consider these churches and the convent as separate landmarks of the town’s architecture, without combining them into a single building complex.
Residences and Historic Architectural Styles
Villa Caristo is a representative 18th-century residence and is considered a unique example of Baroque art in Calabria. It is set in a centuries-old park covering more than 20 hectares. Castello di San Fili was built in the 16th century as a defensive tower and was later converted into a residence by the feudal lords. These two buildings illustrate different historical functions: a representative residence in one case, and a tower initially shaped by military purposes that was later used as a residence in the other.
Art, Arcades and Views
The Chiesa Matrice, the Parrocchia Annunciazione, contains altarpieces by Cozza. It also houses a marble bust of Saint Barbara. Along Via Forzo, there are characteristic lammie, or arcades. Piazza Forzio offers a different view of the town and its surroundings, with a viewpoint across the valley as far as the adjoining sea. Thus, alongside the churches and residences, individual works of art, architectural details and a viewpoint across the valley as far as the adjoining sea also come to the fore.
Exploring Stignano by Mountain Bike
For a combination of local history and cycling, the Stignano MTB route starts at Piazza S. Pietro and passes through part of the historic centre. The route also includes a section leading to Castello di San Fili as well as a short section on foot. When planning your day, you can therefore take into account the start at Piazza S. Pietro, the route through the town centre and the connection to the castle as separate points of reference. Stignano therefore appeals both to visitors interested in culture and to travellers who would like to include historic buildings and a mountain-bike route side by side in their plans.
