Serino among Springs, Chestnuts and History

Serino is a destination with several distinct points of interest: springs and historic waterworks, the Serino chestnut, religious sites, archaeological traces and marked trails. The springs of Serino were used for the Acquedotto Augusteo (Fontis Augustei Aquæductus), the Acquedotto Sannitico (Acquæductus Abellinum-Beneventum) and the Acquedotto di Serino, inaugurated in 1885. It is precisely the combination of springs and several aqueducts that gives the town a distinctive historical perspective.

Chestnuts and Local Events

The culinary heritage includes Serino’s inclusion in the protected production area of Marrone/Castagna di Serino IGP. The chestnut is also associated with the 48th edition of the Sagra della Castagna di Serino IGP: at this edition, food stalls were to offer traditional local dishes featuring the famous chestnut and Marrone di Serino IGP. Canalarte is an event dedicated to crafts, street performers, folklore and art. During the three evenings of Canalarte, local dishes and products from the regional cuisine are prepared by experienced housewives wearing traditional costumes.

Religious and Historic Sites

In Località Canale stands the Chiesa di San Lorenzo, an 18th-century chapel. In Località Cerreto, the Grotta del SS. Salvatore contains stalactites, an altar with an image of the Transfiguration of Jesus and two wooden statues. In Serino, you can therefore encounter two religious sites with very different forms: a historic chapel and a grotto where natural formations and religious furnishings come together. The Ruderi del Castello Feudale di Serino are believed to have originated around AD 839 and to have taken their present form in 1159.

Archaeological Traces in the Landscape

Restoration work at the Parco Archeologico Ambientale Civita di Ogliara has brought towers and a gate to light. Another prehistoric trace can be found at the Tornola spring: excavations at the spring uncovered worked stone points dating back approximately 31,000 years. The find adds a very early prehistoric layer to the landscape, clearly distinct from the structures dated to later periods. Località Civita is also the destination of an excursion that follows the Sabato River and ends at a historically significant site.

Hiking, Horse Riding and Cycling Trails

Serino has marked trails that can be used on foot or by bicycle. The Parco Faunistico offers opportunities for hiking and horse riding. Together with the excursion along the Sabato River, these provide various ways to explore the surrounding area actively and at different paces. The trails appeal both to visitors who want to include short periods of exercise in their trip and to travelers who wish to combine nature observation with regional history.
