Annunziata is one of the historically independent residential settlement centres of Castel Morrone and part of a linear polycentric settlement structure. At its centre are the Chiesa Ave Gratia Plena o dell’Annunziata, the Casa museo civiltà contadina, historic residential architecture and an approximately two-kilometre-long footpath to Monte Castello. This makes it possible to view the area through its sacred architecture, rural everyday culture, settlement history and a rural path.

Church, frescoes and bell tower

The Chiesa Ave Gratia Plena o dell’Annunziata was founded in the 16th century. Inside are frescoes dating from 1735. The bell tower dates from the 17th century, is approximately 30 metres high and consists of elements made of grey tuff. The different dates show that several historical layers can be identified in this sacred building: its foundation, interior decoration and tower belong to different periods.

Everyday culture at the Casa museo civiltĂ  contadina

The Casa museo civiltĂ  contadina is located at Via Altieri 52 in Annunziata. Its collection comprises more than 500 items. The museum displays tools, equipment and household objects associated with everyday life, farm work, the processing of agricultural products and small-scale subsistence crafts. This brings into focus not just a single object, but a broad range of items through which rural work and household life can be viewed in their different contexts.

Historic building stock of Annunziata

The historic building stock of the residential settlement centres of Castel Morrone, including Annunziata, consists primarily of two-storey houses with external staircases, courtyards and pitched roofs. Annunziata also has architectural evidence dating from the 18th century. These features draw attention to the settlement structure and to an architecture in which living spaces, outdoor areas and paths are closely connected. Those interested in historic townscapes will therefore find not only individual buildings here, but also characteristic architectural details.

Historical traces in the surrounding area

The former Ospedale dell’Annunziata can be traced back to 1587. Its former status remains part of its history; this does not imply a present-day function. The Mulini Reali palace is also located in the vicinity of Annunziata. Together with the church, the museum and the historic building stock, this surrounding area broadens the view from individual sights to the history of the settlement and its surroundings.

Easy footpath to Monte Castello

The easy footpath from Castel Morrone Town Hall to Monte Castello begins at Piazza del Municipio in Contrada Annunziata. The route is approximately 2 km long, takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes and has an elevation difference of 250 m. This gives you a clearly defined opportunity to extend your stay with a route having a known starting point, approximate length, stated duration and specified elevation difference. The approximate figures help you fit the tour realistically into your personal daily plans.
