Ancient Cales between the city walls and amphitheatre

The city walls of Cales enclosed six gates. Some sections of the walls date back to the 5th century BC, pointing to the long prehistory of the Roman city. Its architectural history also includes the so-called Ponte delle Monache. It was carved into the tuff rock so that a road could run towards the ager Falernus.

The Roman amphitheatre of Cales dates from the 1st century BC and features later construction phases from the Imperial period. Together with the city walls and the Ponte delle Monache, it illustrates how strongly the ancient settlement was shaped by public buildings, transport routes and fortifications. The Autostrada del Sole crosses the urban area of ancient Cales, providing a striking modern reference point in this historic landscape.

Baths, grottoes and sacred history

Among the outstanding remains of Cales are the central baths from the early 1st century BC. Parts of their rooms are almost completely preserved; some still feature stucco decoration. The northern baths date from the 1st to the 2nd century AD. Their remains are arranged on three levels and are visible along the Cardo maximus.
