Roccamonfina: volcanic landscapes, chestnuts and historic paths
Accommodation in Roccamonfina
Roccamonfina lies on the southern side of its extinct crater. The volcano’s broad caldera and the cone of Monte Santa Croce, which reaches 1,005 metres, shape the landscape. Centuries-old chestnut forests, volcanic soils and far-reaching views give the town its distinctive character. Nature, trails, regional specialities and historic sites take centre stage.
Volcanic landscapes and chestnut forests
The volcanic soils favour chestnut forests, where crocuses, buttercups, primroses, orchids, anemones and violets bloom in spring. The forests of the Roccamonfina volcano also provide a habitat for foxes, wild boar, badgers, beech martens and hares. Almost panoramic views in every direction open up from Monte La Frascara, Monte Santa Croce and the Lattani Mountains. This means the landscape can be understood not only as a volcanic area, but also as a varied setting for peaceful nature experiences and outings with scenic views.
Trails between the river, historic routes and abandoned places
The Sentiero degli antichi Mulini runs along the Savone River between the hamlets of Torano and Garofali and then continues to the town of Roccamonfina. As a standalone trail, it is 6 kilometres long, ranges from moderate to easy in difficulty and takes around three hours to walk. The Sentiero delle Orchidee e delle Nevi is easier and measures approximately 4.5 to 5 kilometres each way. The different lengths and difficulty levels of the two trails in Roccamonfina help you adapt your day’s plans to your preferred walking pace.
Another trail leads to the uninhabited ghost village of Cerquarola. In its immediate vicinity stands a well-preserved ancient nevera in the shape of an inverted cone. A historic route within the town itself also points to former connections: from Piazza Nicola Amore, Via Napoli follows an old route towards the hamlet of Fontanafredda, with which it was once connected.
Churches, art and an unusual clock
The Collegiata di Santa Maria Maggiore offers an insight into Roccamonfina’s long building history. Its structure dates back to the beginning of the 11th century. At the base of the Collegiata stands a public clock depicting the sun, the moon and part of the Roccamonfina landscape. The Santuario e Convento di SS. Maria dei Lattani is a remarkable example of 15th-century Campanian art and complements the nature and trail experiences with a clear cultural focus.
Chestnuts as a local speciality
The PGI “Castagna di Roccamonfina” is reserved for the fruits of the Primitiva variety groups, also known as Tempestiva; Napoletana, also known as Riccia or Riccia Napoletana; Mercogliana, also known as Marrone; Paccuta; and Lucente, also known as Lucida. The Tempestiva chestnut variety takes its name from its early ripening and is marketed from the beginning of September. The Sagra della Castagna di Roccamonfina is also part of the local history. It was founded in 1976 to celebrate the chestnut harvest and the sale of chestnuts. Roccamonfina’s historic chestnut market was established at the beginning of the 20th century and took place in the town’s largest square.
