Vitulazio between Monte Tutuni, history and local culture

Vitulazio lies on the southern slopes of Monte Tutuni, west of the Volturno River. The Agnena runs through the municipal area, which is also crisscrossed by a dense network of predominantly artificial canals used for agriculture. The foothills, river landscape and cultivated plains give the town a distinct regional character. Here, the landscape combines the mountain and river setting with waterways shaped by agriculture.

The nearest Capua interchange on the A1 Napoli–Milano motorway is located on the border between Vitulazio and Pastorano, around 5 km from Vitulazio town centre. For those arriving by car, Capua provides the geographical link between the motorway, the municipal boundary and the town centre.

The historic town centre contains old buildings with courtyard or semi-courtyard layouts. Along Via Roma, Via Ruggero I, Via Santa Maria dell’Agnena and Via Regina Margherita, they form a continuous street frontage. One of the landmark buildings is the Chiesa di Santa Maria dell’Agnena. Its single-nave interior has a vaulted ceiling, as well as a side chapel dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel and a sacristy. In Tutuni, at the foot of the mountain of the same name, stands the Casino di caccia borbonico. An avenue connects it with Palazzo CapeceGaleota. The architectural heritage therefore ranges from the enclosed streetscape of the town centre to the Bourbon hunting lodge at the foot of the mountain.

Historic town centre and Bourbon architecture

Historically, Vitulazio was an agricultural casale in the sphere of influence of ancient Etruscan Capua, at least as early as the 6th century BC. In a small temple in Contrada Piglialarmi, the interior walls depict the god Mars and two female figures, probably Venus and Ceres. An archaeological find from the Roman period was also discovered between Chiesa dei Luciani and Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII: a so-called decumanial stone. It may bear a judgment concerning an inheritance among members of the Roman Gracchi family. The ancient evidence thus ranges from religious depictions to a possible Roman judgment concerning an inheritance.

During the festivities in honour of Santa Maria dell’Agnena, a votive float was carried through the streets of Vitulazio. Another local tradition is the culinary festival “A Scella ’e Guanto”. Its third edition was announced for 2026. The votive float centres on the procession through the streets, while the sagra focuses on culinary traditions.
