Nerano Between Coastal Paths, History and Mediterranean Landscapes

Nerano stretches across a valley on the slopes of the San Costanzo mountains. Colorful houses and pergolas blend harmoniously into the surrounding landscape; at the same time, the village is considered atmospheric and wild in character. The village center developed around the Church of San Salvatore.

Walking to Baia di Ieranto

The path to Baia di Ieranto begins at Nerano’s piazzetta, after walking a few meters along the road toward Marina del Cantone. The hike takes about 45 minutes and includes around 250 meters of elevation gain. It leads through Mediterranean scrub and terraced olive groves, combining physical activity with distinctive scenery.

Baia di Ieranto can only be reached on foot or by canoe. Along the way, beneath the rocky outcrop with the Chiesa di San Costanzo, you can see the entrance to the Grotta delle Noglie. The descent to Ieranto’s small beach, known as Marinella, leads down an old staircase. FAI offers guided tours and nature activities at Baia di Ieranto.

Views and Historical Traces

The route offers views of Punta Penna, Punta Campanella and Capri with its Faraglioni. At a fork in the path, you can continue to the Torre di Montalto, a 16th-century coastal defense tower. The route also passes Villa Rosa, where Norman Douglas wrote his work Siren Land.

The Torre di Recommone stands nearby and dates back to 1567. The Church of Jesus Salvatore was elevated to parish church status in 1613 and has three naves separated by arches and pillars. Its origins appear to date back to the 15th century.

Village, Sea and Regional Cuisine

Nearby Marina del Cantone has pebble beaches and clear water. From its beach, Recommone Beach can be reached via a short, scenic path along the promontory of St. Antonio; access by sea is also possible.

Practical Information for Nerano

There is a small parking area at the entrance to Nerano; alternatively, the car can be parked along the road. On May 14, a procession carrying the statue of the patron saint travels from the Church of Santa Croce in Termini to the Chiesa di San Costanzo. The statue remains there until the third Sunday in July, before returning to the mother church.
