Casa Vitagliano: Hiking between Tramonti, Maiori and Minori

Casa Vitagliano has a direct connection to several hiking routes in the Tramonti area. The Sentiero delle Formichelle is a historic footpath that connects Tramonti with the nearby coastal towns of Maiori and Minori. At Casa Vitagliano, it leaves the paved road at an elevation of 218 metres and becomes a municipal footpath.

Hiking trails with clearly defined routes

About 200 metres after Casa Vitagliano, the Sentiero delle Formichelle reaches the junction with the Sentiero 315E. After passing through Casa Vitagliano, the Sentiero 315E initially climbs to the Vallone Capo d’Acqua at an elevation of 328 metres. It then reaches the scenic Punta Mele at 366 metres. In Mandrino, the Sentiero 315E ends at an elevation of 442 metres at the junction with trails 315A and 315D.

The history of the Formichelle

The Formichelle were women who carried freshly picked lemons in baskets weighing around 55 kilograms on their heads to Maiori and Minori. Near the Chiesa di Sant’Elia, the Sentiero delle Formichelle crosses the Sentiero delle 13 Chiese and then descends via Via Vitagliano to Casa Vitagliano. The trail also leads to the Vallone Trapulico; there, an old water conduit carved into the rock can be seen alongside it.

A trail dedicated to the historian, economist and naturalist Giustino Fortunato is associated with his three-day crossing of the Monti Lattari in 1877. This route led from Cava dei Tirreni via Casa Vitagliano to Punta Campanella.

Circular hikes and citrus terraces

The circular hike from Casa Vitagliano follows the Sentiero 315C and the Sentiero delle Formichelle to the centre of Minori. The Sentiero dei Limoni connects Minori and Maiori along citrus terraces; from San Gineto, it can be reached on foot in about 20 minutes. In the wider surroundings of Casa Vitagliano, the Sentiero delle 13 Chiese forms a circular route through 11 of Tramonti’s 13 villages. A CAI circular hike starts and ends in the Località Casa Vitagliano di Tramonti.

Stages with cultural attractions

It includes a 1.3-kilometre round-trip detour to the Convento di San Nicola. On this stage, the CAI 315E is followed from kilometre 3.9 to kilometre 9.2. Casa Vitagliano is one of the stage’s points of interest.

Access to the Sentiero 315E

To access the Sentiero 315E, take the SITA bus on the Maiori–Tramonti route to Pucara, then walk approximately 2 kilometres to Paterno Sant’Elia.
