San Mango Piemonte: Monte Tubenna, Churches and Local Festivals

San Mango Piemonte combines mountain landscapes, sacred history, regional traditions and a connection to the Mela Annurca. Monte Tubenna, historic churches and local festivals shape different aspects of the town.

Monte Tubenna and the View over Salerno

Monte Tubenna extends across the territories of Castiglione del Genovesi, San Mango Piemonte and San Cipriano Picentino. Its highest point reaches 834 metres above sea level. From Monte Tubenna, there is a view of Salerno and the Gulf of Salerno. These three aspects give the landscape around San Mango Piemonte a clear profile: several municipal territories, a distinctive elevation and a view towards the coast.

Chapels, Churches and Historic Traces

Castello Merola on Monte San Magno was a defensive structure protecting San Mango. Also associated with Monte San Magno is the Eremo di San Magno, a chapel carved into the rock with frescoes from the 16th century. In the Eremo-grotta di San Magno, above the altar on the rock, there is an old image of San Magno, created in 1542 by an unknown artist.

Several churches bear witness to the town's long history. The church of San Matteo ad Offiano is also known as Sordina and dates from the late 10th century. The church of Santa Maria ad Curtim was founded in 1080. Santa Maria ad Curtim houses numerous old paintings and the reliquary of San Magno. The church of San Nicola de Pedemonte dates from 1138.

Pilgrimage, Festivals and the Mela Annurca

Every year on 19 August, San Mango Piemonte hosts the traditional pilgrimage to the grotto of San Magno. The local traditional calendar also includes the Fiera di Sant’Antonio on 13 June. Both dates anchor religious and community traditions in the town's annual cycle.

Regional food culture also has its own focal point. For several years, the Pro Loco has organised Gustannurca in San Mango Piemonte, a festival of the Mela Annurca Campana IGP featuring gastronomic gatherings, discussions and performances centred on the valuable fruit from the Picentini area. Mela Annurca is associated with San Mango Piemonte.

Getting to San Mango Piemonte

The SITA-Sud route 5180 connects San Cipriano Picentino, Castiglione del Genovesi and Salerno and stops in San Mango Piemonte. The main road access to San Mango Piemonte is the exit from the A3 Salerno–Reggio Calabria motorway. This exit opened in July 2009.
