Ispani is situated on a hill overlooking the Gulf of Policastro. The municipality also includes Capitello, Ispani’s coastal village; the Church of San Ferdinando Re is located in the centre of the village. At the same time, the municipal area lies on the edge of the Parco Nazionale del Cilento, del Vallo di Diano e Alburni. For your stay, this creates a spatial contrast between the elevated town, the coastal village and the edge of the national park.
Churches and Historic Buildings
The main church of Ispani stands in the main town. It is dedicated to San Nicola di Bari and dates back to an old foundation. Capitello has its own architectural character: San Ferdinando Re is located in the centre of the village, and the original building consisted of a single nave with a semicircular apse and a bell tower. The Church of San Cristoforo in the hamlet of the same name dates back to the 16th century.
Other historic buildings include Castellaro, a 12th-century castle that was part of the defensive ring of Policastro. The enclosing walls, a carriage arch, a sentry box and a marble plaque remain from Palazzo Carafa. The Torre Normanna in Capitello is currently privately owned and therefore cannot be visited. It is associated with the FAI’s “I Luoghi del Cuore” campaigns from 2020 and 2022.
Capitello and Spatial Orientation
San Ferdinando Re can be reached by motor vehicles via a level road running inland, parallel to the waterfront promenade. When choosing a hotel in Ispani, this structure of the municipal area can serve as a useful point of reference: depending on your travel plans, the main town or the coastal village may become more central.
For travelling to Ispani, the Strada Statale 18 Tirrena inferiore is the most important road connection. The Strada Provinciale 110 connects Ispani and Capitello. Both roads help you place visits to the main town and the coastal village within the spatial context of your stay.
Green Areas and Local Festivals
Nature and leisure also have a place in Ispani away from the immediate coastal setting. Bosco Catena is a green area with equipped spaces for relaxation and excursions.
