San Rufo: Mountains, Forests and History in Cilento

San Rufo lies between the two mountains Spina dell'Ausino and Cucuzzo delle Puglie. The Passo della Sentinella connects the Vallo di Diano with the Valle del Calore Salernitano. San Rufo is also one of the municipalities within the Parco Nazionale del Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni.

Forests and trails around San Rufo

The Boschi di San Rufo stretch across hilly and mountainous terrain. Oak, beech and chestnut trees are the main species in the woodland. There are numerous trails in this area, where you may encounter birds of prey, small mammals and numerous insects. San Rufo therefore offers various opportunities for nature observation and peaceful exploration.

Accessibility in the natural area

When planning a visit, an important limitation should be taken into account: the Boschi di San Rufo do not have equipped trails and are therefore not accessible to people with reduced mobility. The existing paths should therefore not be equated with accessibility designed to reduce barriers.

Getting there through the mountain region

San Rufo can be reached via the A3 Salerno–Reggio Calabria, the Atena Lucana–Val d'Agri exit and then the SS598 towards San Rufo. This sequence of roads provides the main point of reference for planning your journey.

Historic centre and stone portals

The historic centre of San Rufo is home to Fondanieddo, a very old fountain. It is located more than 600 metres above sea level and near the Passo della Sentinella. The historic centre also includes the old Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore. The townscape is further enhanced by elegant aristocratic palaces from the 17th and 18th centuries, whose stone portals have been preserved.

Castello di Calvanello and early settlement

The ruins of the Castello di Calvanello lie immediately outside the historic centre of San Rufo and above the Santuario della Tempa. In the village of Calvanello, the ruins date from the 9th to the 10th century and served exclusively military purposes. Archaeological finds in the San Rufo area also provide evidence of human settlement since the Bronze Age.

Trails, pilgrimage site and annual festivals

A snowshoe hike from the Passo della Sentinella to Monte Puglie begins at a roadside area on the SS166. It follows a tratturo through pastureland and into a beech forest. Every year, the Festa della Madonna della Tempa takes place at the Santuario della Tempa outside the inhabited centre of San Rufo.

Chestnuts and cucina povera

The Festa della Castagna is an enogastronomic event in San Rufo. It celebrates the chestnuts and fruits of the local forests, as well as traditional farming customs. Regional cuisine also includes Lagane e ceci, a cucina povera dish made with lagane and local chickpeas. Lagane are fresh, wider pasta-like noodles and provide the dish with its characteristic ingredient.
