San Giovanni a Piro offers travelers who want to combine panoramic views with cultural history several clearly distinct points of interest. Vistas from the heights, coastal landscapes, religious buildings, museums and cultural heritage trails provide different focal points for planning your trip.

Mountain Panoramas and Coastal Landscapes

The summit of Timpa del Piombo is located at an altitude of 415 m and offers panoramic views over the Tyrrhenian coast. Monte Bulgheria provides far-reaching panoramic views from the Gulf of Policastro along the coast of Palinuro to the heights of Monte Sacro and Monte Cervati. The two mountain destinations therefore offer different perspectives for viewing the Tyrrhenian coast and the Gulf of Policastro. The Costa degli Infreschi e della Masseta marine protected area extends as far as Scario in the Gulf of Policastro.

Another viewpoint is the Pianoro di Ciolandrea, which is considered a place of particular landscape interest. It can be reached via the hiking trail leading to the Santuario della Madonna di Pietrasanta and is also known as the “Belvedere delle quattro Regioni”. The hike begins at the viewpoint in the village of Ciolandrea.

Religious Buildings and Archaeological Traces

The Cenobio Basiliano di San Giovanni Battista was built in 990 by Basilian monks. The church’s main nave dates from 1417. The Santuario della Madonna di Pietrasanta is also associated with the history of the Basilian monks: it was carved out of the rock in 1200 by Basilian monks, is located at an altitude of 650 m and lies 2 km from San Giovanni a Piro.

The Riparo del Molare has been designated by the municipality as a prehistoric settlement and is protected as an archaeological site. The range of cultural sites thus extends from medieval religious buildings to an explicitly protected prehistoric site.

Museums in San Giovanni a Piro and Scario

The Museo Ortega officially opened on March 17, 2011. On the ground floor, the “Segadores” suite contains twenty engravings depicting the work of anonymous farmers in the fields of Spanish latifundia society during the Franco dictatorship. The “Segadores” suite focuses on anonymous farmers and their work in the fields. The Museo Ortega is open daily except Mondays from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. time slot falls in the late afternoon and early evening.

In Scario, one of the main districts of San Giovanni a Piro, the Museo del Paleolitico di Scario houses the permanent exhibition «Centomila anni prima di Scario».

Exploring the SGap Route

The SGap route leads to the Grotta del Ceraseto. There, wall remains and basins for collecting water bear witness to the eremitic way of life of Italo-Greek Basilian monks of the Byzantine rite in the second half of the 10th century. The route also includes a stop at Mimì’s workshop.

At Mimì’s workshop, visitors can see the traditional processing of willow rods, reeds, broom, olive wood and heather to make “panari”, “gratedde” and other objects. At this stop, both the raw materials and the objects made from them take center stage. In this way, the SGap route brings archaeological traces and inherited craftwork together within a common thematic context, while the viewpoints provide the stay’s landscape focus.
