Vibonati – Medieval Streets and the “City of Portals”

Vibonati’s Historic Core

In its historic center, Vibonati appears as a largely intact medieval village with stone-paved streets. Large parts of this center can only be visited on foot. The old town stretches for almost 2 kilometers along a narrow, elongated rocky spur at an altitude of about 110 meters. For your walk, the appeal therefore lies in the combination of streets, elevation and historic buildings.

Churches, Portals and Art

The many striking medieval stone portals are among the notable details; this is why Vibonati is known as the “City of Portals.” The Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata in Vibonati features frescoes from the 12th and 13th centuries. A small tower, or torrino, is attached to the Chiesa della Santissima Trinità in Vibonati and preserves a trace of Vibonati’s former fortification system. The Santuario di Sant'Antonio abate in Vibonati dates from the 11th century.

The sanctuary contains an 18th-century organ. It also houses a painting of the Madonna del Rosario attributed to the school of the Flemish painter Teodoro D'Errico.

Palazzo, Monastery and Fortifications

The Palazzo De Nicolellis in Vibonati dates from around 1400 and hosted Giuseppe Garibaldi on September 3, 1860. The Monastero di San Francesco da Paola was founded in 1611 and has a central cloister with arches and octagonal columns.

Another historical trace can be found in Villammare: Torre Petrosa was built there in 1595. After the end of the Turkish threat, it served as a sanitary cordon against the plague epidemic of 1656.

Museums and Local Tradition

Guided experiences in Vibonati include a visit to the Borgo Antico di Vibonati. The Museo Logos offers an educational theatrical projection introducing visitors to the museum’s origins. The Casa Museo di Arte Contadina contains numerous agricultural implements from the past century. The range of visits therefore extends from the historic center and a staged museum introduction to objects from the rural past.

The local festival calendar includes the patronal celebration of Sant'Antonio Abate in Vibonati, held on January 17. This date provides a clear point of reference if you would like to include the festival in your travel plans.

Woodland Landscape in the Municipality

The landscape of the municipality of Vibonati also includes the Bosco di Santa Lucia. It covers about 40 hectares and consists of coniferous and deciduous trees, especially cork oaks.
