Cycling connections along the Reno

Cultural heritage in Sacerno, Longara and Sant’Elena

In Sacerno, a district of Calderara di Reno, stands the Cippo di Sacerno. The memorial was erected in the 16th century by the Servi di Maria, the owners of the property. In Longara, the Chiesa di S. Michele Arcangelo has been documented since the 13th century. Its history therefore reaches far back; historically, the church could only be reached from Bologna by boat because of the Reno River.

The Chiesa di Sant’Elena also spans several historical periods. It was built by Benedictines in the 11th century. The apse, some decorative features and arches integrated into the walls have survived from the Romanesque church. The present-day Chiesa di Sant’Elena was built in 1730. For visitors interested in cultural history, this creates a concrete comparison between the preserved Romanesque elements and the later church building.

Protected nature at the Golena S. Vitale

The Golena S. Vitale is recognized at European level as a special protection area (IT4050018) within the Natura 2000 network. It consists of a 30-hectare riparian forest and provides a habitat for kingfishers and herons, especially night herons and little egrets.

Culture, exhibitions and active spaces

The Casa della Cultura “Italo Calvino” has an auditorium with a refreshment area, a workshop room, a reading room and a music rehearsal room. Its covered square hosts exhibitions of contemporary art. The Settimana Calderarese also takes place between the end of May and the beginning of June.

The Skatepark del Bargellino is located on a 2,000 m² public site and includes a 1,400 m² course. The facility is designed for national and international competitions in the Olympic “Park” discipline. Calderara di Reno is also home to the exhibition venue of the Museo Archeologico Ambientale.
