Caves, Water and Striking Rock Landscapes
The Tana dell’Uomo Selvatico is a tectonic natural cave with clear traces of an underground stream that has since disappeared. It cannot be explored in its entirety without the guidance of cave guides; however, the first chamber is accessible at a depth of 8 to 10 metres. In the Orrido di Gea area, waterfalls, cold, clear pools and distinctive limestone formations await you along the streambed.
The Grotte di Labante also shape the natural character of the surrounding area. They are considered a Site of Community Importance and are among the largest examples of travertine formations in Europe. The natural caves lie beneath a waterfall. The park at the Grotte di Labante is also a starting point for hikes and mountain bike excursions.
On the Il sentiero delle Tane route, the path leads through the Serretti area, where enormous vertical sandstone monoliths can be seen. The Big Bench offers another perspective on the landscape: from there, the view extends across the Vergatello Valley, from Monte Vigese to Montovolo.
Routes Between Landscape and Memory
The Linea Gotica route leads to the summit of Monte della Spe. Trenches and communication trenches from the Second World War, as well as several memorial steles dedicated to fallen Allied soldiers, are still visible there. The I tesori del Reno trail leads to Castel d’Aiano and then continues on to Rocca di Roffeno.
Religious and historic sites complement this landscape experience. The Santuario della Madonna di Brasa is a destination for numerous pilgrims; from Castel d’Aiano, a wooded Way of the Cross leads there. The Tane del Paroletto caves served as a refuge for local residents during the bombings of the Second World War.
Culture, Art and Local History
On the Le Case Torri di Roffeno route, you will come across the Poggiolo tower house near Rocca di Roffeno. The Santa Lucia Abbey is considered an ancient Benedictine monastery, whose origins date back to before the year 1000. Guided tours of the Museo delle Storie dalla Linea Gotica are offered during opening hours and by prior reservation.
The history of art is also connected with the surrounding area: in the 1930s, Monzone was the home of the painter Giorgio Morandi. During this period, he painted several works inspired by the surrounding landscape. The Museo della civiltà contadina Caseificio Pieve di Roffeno preserves more than 2,000 years of dairy-production history—with milk consumed raw or processed into cheese and ricotta.
