Fortress, gates and town walls
The castle of Castel Guelfo di Bologna has a rectangular layout with four corner towers, which are still clearly visible. The town walls of Castel Guelfo di Bologna are approximately 5 metres high and up to 2.5 metres thick. Campanazzo was the only gate to the fortress of Castel Guelfo di Bologna and faced towards Bologna.
Palazzi and Neoclassical architecture
The Palazzo Malvezzi Hercolani is associated with a building commissioned in 1448 by Virgilio Malvezzi, the lord of the area. The Palazzo del Podestà was probably built around the middle of the 15th century. A later architectural period is represented by the church of San Giovanni Battista Decollato e Sacro Cuore: it was built between 1799 and 1802 and designed by Angelo Venturoli. Its interior features an elegant Neoclassical design. The church therefore dates from a later construction phase than the two palazzi.
