Farneto combines the landscape of the Gessi Bolognesi e Calanchi dell'Abbadessa protected area with cave archaeology, trails and local festival culture. The Grotta del Farneto, the routes along CAI trails and the Sagra paesana offer different perspectives on the area. When planning your trip, nature, history and regional cuisine can be considered here as separate highlights.

Nature and trails around Farneto

From the "Casa Fantini" Visitor Centre, the route follows CAI Trail 804 to CAI Trail 806. Its circular route runs alongside the Gaibola and Ronzana sinkholes. Along the way, you can admire woodland, gypsum outcrops and a monumental tree. This route therefore highlights both geological formations and distinctive features of the landscape.

The Ciclovia dei Gessi di Gaibola begins at San Lazzaro di Savena railway station and ends at Ozzano railway station. If you want to identify a cycling stage by its two endpoints, these stations mark the start and end of the route.

Finding your way around the protected area

After the "Luigi Fantini" Park Centre and the nearby Grotta del Farneto, the cycling route reaches La Cicogna. From there, you can rejoin the cycle path to San Lazzaro di Savena railway station or return to Ozzano railway station via Via Palazzetti. These two options give a cycling tour a clear, easy-to-follow itinerary.

The "Casa Fantini" Visitor Centre provides information material on various aspects of the protected area and the park's activities. It also offers information about natural history and caving tours for schools and visitor groups. In Farneto, the protected area includes spaces for visitors to stop and change transport; their enhancement is planned.

Cave and archaeology

The Grotta del Farneto was discovered in 1871 by Francesco Orsoni, who carried out the first important archaeological investigations there. In the 1960s, Luigi Fantini discovered Copper Age burials in the same cave. The finds are displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Bologna. Farneto's historical perspective therefore ranges from the story of the cave's discovery to the archaeological objects.

The Museo Memoriale della Libertà and the Museo Storico del Soldatino "M. Massacesi" are located in the vicinity of Farneto. They complement the cave and park themes with two further specific museum destinations nearby.

Festival culture and specialties

During the Festa della Madonna della Cintura in Farneto, an image of Mary and the infant Jesus from Farneto's 18th-century church is carried in a procession. The Sagra paesana associated with Farneto's religious festival offers specialties prepared by sfogline from Farneto: tortelloni, lasagne, polenta, grilled meat and crescentine. The festival thus combines religious tradition with regional cuisine.
