Gaggio Montano: Sasso di Rocca and Historic Houses

Rock, Summit and Apennine Views

The Faro dei Caduti della Montagna replaced an earlier building with a clock and bell on the summit of Sasso di Rocca in 1951. From the Faro’s viewing terrace, the view extends across the surrounding Apennine landscape. The rock block and lighthouse thus jointly shape the image of a place where geological uniqueness, local history and landscape meet directly in the attractions found on site.

Historic Houses with Several Historical Layers

Casa Tanari dates from the 13th or 14th century. Its courtyard is accessed through a 16th-century archway. This building, in particular, reveals different periods in a single building complex, without its earlier origins being obscured by later architectural details.

Casa Albergati Capacelli was created from the former fortress and preserves rooms from the 14th century as well as fragments of frescoes from the early 15th century. The fresco fragments date from a later period than the preserved rooms in Casa Albergati Capacelli. Casa Pasi dates back to the 14th or 15th century and was rebuilt in the mid-16th century in the forms of the late Tuscan Renaissance.

Church and Museum in the Townscape

The Chiesa dei Santi Michele Arcangelo e Nazario stands in the oldest part of Gaggio Montano and is located in a large park.

The private museum “Il nostro Novecento” is located in Gaggio Montano on Via Giuliano Giordani, at the foot of the staircase leading to the parish church. Advance booking by telephone is required for visits.

Park, Remembrance and Visible Traces of War

Ca’ del Ponte includes a park with numerous valuable plant species. This broadens the view of Gaggio Montano to include a park whose character is defined by numerous valuable plant species and where the botanical diversity of the area is evident.

Near the village of Abetaia, the Monumento ai caduti brasiliani commemorates all Brazilian soldiers who fought in the Gaggio Montano area during the winter and spring of 1944–1945. German defensive installations with trenches, shelters and communication trenches remain visible in the pine forest of Ronchidoso. Both sites preserve different traces of the past: the Monumento ai caduti brasiliani represents remembrance of the Brazilian soldiers, while the installations at Ronchidoso appear as the still-visible structural remains of the defensive lines.
