Thermal Springs with a Long History
The use of Porretta’s springs has been documented since at least the 2nd century AD. Archaeological finds show that these waters were already known in Etruscan and Roman times and were visited for their exceptional therapeutic properties. At the Terme di Porretta, a guided tour leads through a 19th-century gallery and offers a direct view of the sulphurous thermal springs. Online purchases are available for admission, treatments and thermal trails; access is subject to the conditions specified at the time.
Porretta between Soul and Local History
The Porretta Soul Festival was established in 1988. The Porretta SOUL Museum displays documents, memorabilia, stage clothing, photographs, publications and information panels on the festival’s cultural heritage. It is housed in a 19th-century prison building in the historic centre of Porretta Terme. Numerous murals in the streets and alleyways depict famous musicians who performed at Rufus Thomas Park; the Porretta SOUL Festival’s street art project also takes place in the town of Porretta Terme.
The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena stands on elevated ground on the ruins of an ancient fortification. Its high altar features the altarpiece “Noli me tangere” by Dionigio Calvaert. The DEMM Museum displays several motorcycles made by the historic motor company.
Hiking Trails between Hills and Valley Mountains
Porretta Terme is an ideal starting point for excursions into nature between the nearby hills and the peaks of the surrounding valley mountains. CAI Trail 101A, also known as the “Arrigo Carboni” del Monte della Croce Trail, leads from Porretta ex Laghetto to the connection with Trail 103. The CAI Alto Appennino Bolognese section of Porretta Terme maintains its hiking trails and provides route views as well as downloadable GPS tracks.
The Sentiero Marconiano leads from Porretta Terme via Rio Fonti, the junction with Trail 101, Madonna di Palareda, Ca di Ianni, Le Croci, la Torre, Ca Marsili, Gaggiano di Sotto, Gaggiano di Sopra, Castelluccio and the junction towards Terzo to the connection with Trail 107A and onward to Monte Piella.
Getting There and Mountain Cuisine
Porretta Terme can be reached by train from Bologna. Recommended regional mountain dishes include focaccine, zampanelle, necci made from chestnut flour, the famous “Tortina” and “Zuccherini montanari”.
