San Benedetto Val di Sambro: Trails, Nature and Historical Traces

The yellow-marked Anello dei Mulini No. 4 is 19.3 km long, has an elevation gain of 737 m and takes 5.5 hours to walk. The route begins in the center of San Benedetto Val di Sambro, providing a clear starting point for a longer hike.

The Via dei Mulini runs along the Sambro and Setta rivers. The Via Mater Dei passes through Madonna dei Fornelli and Ripoli. Madonna dei Fornelli is also a stage on the long-distance Via degli Dei hiking trail. The routes of SBVSOUTDOOR can be completed on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback.

History in mills, villages and on the mountains

The dates 1671 and 1676 are carved into the door lintel at Mulino Nuovo. On Monte Armato, the remains of a church destroyed during the Second World War can be seen; at that time, the site was part of the Gothic Line. Monte Bastione is associated with the first excavated section of the probably ancient, paved Roman road that connected Bologna and Arezzo and is now known as the Flaminia Militare.

Qualto preserves a medieval settlement structure with stone walls, sandstone slab roofs and dated door lintels. The church in Qualto, dedicated to Saint Gregory, was recently restored. Qualto also has an old drying house where chestnuts are dried in autumn. Zaccanesca still displays medieval architectural features attributed to the Maestri Comacini. Madonna dei Fornelli is home to a valuable depiction of the Madonna, painted in oil on copper.
