Accommodation in Villanova
Villanova brings together archaeological themes, sacred art and a local history that reaches back to the Middle Ages. At its heart is the MUV, with its reconstruction of Marano; at the same time, oratories, a historic church, Villa Gozzadini and an extensive motorcycle collection reveal different facets of the area. Together, they create a cultural destination that can be explored through specific sites and the stories associated with each one.
Archaeology at the MUV
The MUV is housed in the former hayloft of the rural Casa Sant’Anna complex in Villanova di Castenaso. It presents a reconstruction of the monumental necropolis of Marano, dating from the 7th century BC. The reconstruction includes eight sandstone and limestone grave stelae, including the Stele delle Spade. It is complemented by grave goods from aristocratic burials, making both the site itself and individual burial contexts part of the exhibition.
The MUV site is also connected with the history of research into the Villanovan culture. Here, between 1853 and 1856, archaeologist Giovanni Gozzadini identified the traces of a prehistoric culture that was still unknown in Italy at the time and was later described as Villanovan. The MUV conveys the life and rituals of this culture through sounds, video installations and interactive stations. Guided tours, as well as educational and playful workshops for school groups and families, offer additional ways to engage with the subject.
Oratories and Traces of Local History
The private Oratorio di Santa Croce di Villanova is a chapel dating from the late 18th century. Its interior is richly decorated with statues and stucco. Following its restoration, the Oratorio was officially reopened to the public on 11 May 2025.
The Oratorio di S. Croce (Oratorio del Nibbio) has a history dating back at least to 1647. Inside is a relief of the Holy Family with Saint Anne, probably dating from the 18th century. Another historical landmark is the Chiesa di S. Ambrogio di Villanova, which is documented in a land deed from 1141. The former church building was demolished down to its foundations and enlarged in 1793.
Motorcycles and Villa Gozzadini
The Museo Moto Poggi COMP adds a different area of interest. The museum contains historic memorabilia as well as Yamaha motorcycles associated with Rossi, Checa, Biaggi and Gary McCoy. These include more than 60 Yamaha racing motorcycles. The collection thus creates a clear contrast with the prehistoric and sacred themes surrounding the MUV and the oratories.
Villa Gozzadini also offers a connection to the area’s history. It was built in the 16th century by the eponymous Bolognese senator family and is associated with archaeologist Giovanni Gozzadini. Together with the MUV, it forms a coherent historical arc linking a specific building, archaeological research and the finds from Marano.
Travel by Train or Bicycle
From Bologna’s Stazione Centrale, take the suburban train towards Porto Maggiore to Villanova-Ca’ dell’Orbo station. Then walk for approximately 15 minutes. This connection involves completing the final section on foot.
For a bicycle route, the journey from Castenaso to Villanova and back follows the cycle path on the eastern side of Via Villanova to Centro sociale Casa Sant’Anna and the adjoining MUV. This links both a train connection from Bologna and a documented cycling route from Castenaso with a visit to the archaeological museum.
