Castello delle Rocche and the Este History
Construction of Castello delle Rocche began in 1213; in 1402, it was expanded at the request of Margrave Niccolò III d'Este. The dates represent different construction phases of the castle. On its eastern side, the castle had a water entrance; Este eagles were located there. One made of terracotta is now in the Museo Civico, while one made of sandstone stands on the keep. Finale Emilia was an important outpost of the House of Este and an important stop in river traffic between Modena, Ferrara and Venice.
Museums with Regional and Jewish Focus
The Museo del Territorio houses a 16-metre-long model of Finale Emilia's historic old town. It shows the city with the Panaro della Lunga at the beginning of the 19th century. The museum also displays models of a Rascona and the Bucintoro degli Specchi, two watercraft associated with transport between Modena and Ferrara. The Jewish Section contains a gravestone from 1734, a washbasin from the 18th century, ritual objects and an area about the life of General Rubino Ventura. The section on Rubino Ventura complements the material artefacts with a biographical perspective. In the entrance area, the Musei civici – Sezione di archeologia e storia naturale display a 16th-century terracotta Este eagle.
The Jewish Cemetery of Finale Emilia is one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in Emilia-Romagna and preserves 57 surviving gravestones. The town's Jewish history therefore encompasses both museum objects and the preserved cemetery.
Sfogliata and a Fixed December Date
Sfogliata is also known as Torta degli Ebrei and Tibùia. It is a traditional layered pastry from Finale Emilia, made with flour, butter, lard and cheese, and has its origins in the town's Jewish community. At the annual Sfogliata celebration, Sfogliata and Anicione are offered for tasting in Finale Emilia's historic centre on 8 December from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Events and Cycle Path
The programme for Finalestense 2026 includes a ceramics workshop with the volunteers of Manifatti Imperfetti – Mani Tese. The December date and the June date of the historical festival fall in different parts of the year. Finale Estense is a historical re-enactment held in June, depicting events from around 1500 and associated with the Palio delle Cerchie.
The asphalt cycle paths on former railway lines include the Modena–Mirandola–Finale Emilia route. The former railway line provides the route's historical context, while asphalt refers to its current surface.
