Ravarino between history, flavour and the Panaro landscape

Ravarino combines settlement dating back to prehistoric times with palaces, religious buildings, a distinctive balsamic heritage and a fertile landscape. The area extends to the right bank of the Panaro River. Archaeological finds at Castel Crescente prove that it has been inhabited since prehistoric times. This creates a destination where history, local products and landscape stand closely side by side for you.

Palaces and historical traces

Palazzo di Donna Clarina is a typical enclosed courtyard complex with a manor house and a small tower dating from the 16th century. In 1700, the palazzo was inherited by Donna Clarina Rangoni, after the building had been known as “Palazzo del Vescovo” for an extended period. The different names are therefore among the historical traces associated with this building.

Palazzo Rangoni is already mentioned in documents from 1326. From the 16th to the 18th century, it regularly served as a summer residence for the Este dukes and the high nobility. Another highlight is Villa Castelcrescente: the building was constructed by Marchese Aldobrandino Rangoni between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is an Art Nouveau building set in a centuries-old park.

A sanctuary, Chiesolino and a painting in the town hall

The present-day Santuario della Beata Vergine delle Grazie dates from the mid-18th century. Inside, it houses 17th-century paintings, including works by Giuseppe Maria Crespi and Simone Cantarini. The Chiesolino della Cavazzona was built as early as 1722 and adds another historical period to Ravarino’s religious buildings.

Ravarino Town Hall houses the painting “Quadro di S. Rocco e S. Sebastiano”. Originally, it was the altarpiece of the Oratorio di San Rocco, built in 1631 as an ex voto at the end of the plague. In the background, the painting shows the centre of Ravarino in the first decades of the 17th century: walls, towers and the old Rangoni Palace are depicted in it.

Library and accessible orientation

Ravarino also preserves an original manuscript dated 2 March 1862. In it, Francesco Aggazzotti describes the method for producing balsamic vinegar in detail; the manuscript is regarded as the “original recipe” for Aceto Balsamico di Modena. The agriculture of the landscape around Ravarino is also diverse: peaches, plums, strawberries, apples, pears from Emilia-Romagna with the PGI designation, and grapes are grown.
