Architecture on the Piazza
Casa torre dei Rossi preserves the original structure of a fortified house dating from the 15th century. On the side facing the piazza, loopholes and a crossbow slit have been preserved. The side facing the piazza thus makes the house’s fortifications visible through specific architectural features.
The house has four levels. The ground floor was formerly used for storage and is covered by a stone barrel vault. The attic is designed as a dovecote. The storage area, vault and dovecote therefore belong to different levels of the same historic house.
The church of Cedogno also makes its own architectural statement: it is the only church in the surrounding area with a coffered ceiling.
At the portal of Cedogno, the finely worked sandstone with its zigzag decoration immediately catches the eye. The round arch rests on two corbels. Above it is a projecting, pointed keystone featuring a carved sun with the Christ monogram at its center. The round arch, corbels and keystone stand out as separate forms. The geometric decoration and carved symbols are therefore located on different parts of the same portal.
Orientation and Views of the Landscape
The portal of Cedogno is located on the opposite side of the road from Casa torre dei Rossi. It faces a private courtyard bordering the piazza in the center of the village. Casa torre is therefore on one side of the road, while the portal and courtyard adjoin the piazza on the other side.
Cedogno can be reached via a narrow municipal road. From a viewpoint in Cedogno, there are sweeping views of the course of the Enza River. The castles of Rossena and Canossa can also be seen on the horizon.
Church, Tradition and Surroundings
The church of Cedogno became a parish church in 1564 under the title of Santa Maria Assunta. The Festa delle Rane is part of the local tradition: the event was held in Cedogno for its 27th and 29th editions. The Fondazione Magnani Rocca museum is also located in the area surrounding Cedogno.
