Casalborsetti between beach, dunes and the Po Delta

Casalborsetti is the northernmost of Ravenna’s nine seaside resorts and is located about 15 kilometres from the historic city centre. As a holiday resort on the edge of Parco del Delta del Po, the town is shaped by its coastline and protected landscapes.

Coast and protected landscape

The protected coastal area IT4070005 includes Casalborsetti beach, an approximately 300-metre-long section of the adjoining sea and the mouth of the Lamone River. It lies entirely within the Parco Regionale Delta del Po regional park. The protected area therefore extends from the beach across the adjoining section of sea to the mouth of the Lamone.

Fossil dunes dating back to the 16th-century coastline have been preserved near Casalborsetti. The protected coastal area includes active dunes, coastal pine forests with Pinus pinaster and Pinus pinea, as well as consolidated relict dunes north of the Lamone. The coastal dunes are considered particularly impressive because of their size and state of preservation. For nature observation, both fossil and active dunes and coastal pine forests can be found within the same protected coastal area.

Free beach areas and dune boardwalk

Casalborsetti has a wide free beach. North of „Bagno Adria“ there is a free beach area, and another lies south of „Bagno Overbeach“; a further one is located between Campeggio Reno and Romea Family Camping. Those planning to spend time on a free beach can use these three specific local landmarks as reference points.

Several beach resorts in Casalborsetti are equipped to welcome dogs. A boardwalk allows visitors to cross the richly vegetated dunes adjoining the coast without impairing the natural character of these habitats. This means that daily planning can include both free beach areas and a separate route through the dune landscape.

Sports and harbour in the town

Casal B Sport offers individual or group lessons in padel and pickleball with certified coaches. At the Centro Sportivo Zangaglia in Casalborsetti, Casal B Sport has padel courts available to book. The sports facilities are tied to specific venues in the town and therefore differ from the open coastal area.

Casalborsetti also has a small, well-equipped tourist harbour.

Stage to Ravenna

For routes through the surrounding area, Stage 23 of the Via Romea Germanica is relevant: it leads from Casalborsetti to Ravenna through the Pineta di San Vitale. Over several kilometres, it follows unpaved paths through a quiet forest.

After crossing a bridge, the stage continues for several kilometres along a cycle path on the right bank of the river. The path surface therefore changes over the course of the stage. Anyone planning this route should treat the unpaved forest paths and the subsequent cycle path as separate sections and factor in the distance for both sections.
