Triassic Gypsum Formations and Distinctive Landforms

The Triassic Gypsum Formations were created around 200 million years ago through the evaporation of salty seawater. Today, they feature sinkholes, swallow holes and underground caves. Those interested in geology and extraordinary landforms will find an accessible way here to understand the formation of the Apennines. The CAI created the Naturalistic Trail of the Triassic Gypsum Formations to promote greater awareness of this area and its flora and fauna.

High-Mountain Meadows and Trails on Monte Cusna

The Prati di Sara are almost level high-mountain meadows at an altitude of 1,610 metres at the foot of Monte Cusna. Beech forest surrounds the meadows, creating a clear contrast between open land and woodland. From Passo Cisa, the Prati di Sara can be reached via CAI trails 623 and 625 in about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Another trail begins in the hamlet of La Romita on CAI trail 603 and leads to Monte Giovarello through sweet chestnut groves, beech forests and an extensive high-mountain meadow. From the summit, views extend to Pietra di Bismantova, the Apuan Alps and the Serchio Valley in Garfagnana.

Excursions for Different Interests

Le Fonti di Poiano are suitable for a picnic and a relaxing day. This place complements the longer trails and higher elevations with a quieter way to spend time in nature. The Febbio ski resort offers 20 kilometres of downhill runs. In the regulated fishing area of the Torrente Dolo near Civago, sport fishing for Mediterranean brown trout is possible at an altitude of over 1,000 metres. A special fishing permit is required for fishing in the regulated sections.

Minozzo and the Maggio Drammatico

The settlement of Minozzo preserves fragments of the walls of its ancient Rocca. The Chiesa di Santa Maria is preserved on the northern side of the settlement. In the ancient Rocca, the Galleria del Maggio Drammatico preserves stage materials and costumes. Also in the rooms of the ancient Rocca, the Exhibition of Ancient Crafts displays photographs and objects representing traditional occupations. The Sala dell’affresco in the municipal library displays a 16th-century fresco depicting the Madonna di Loreto. The Maggio Drammatico continues to be performed every summer in Villa Minozzo by various local theatre groups.

Fishing on the Torrente Dolo

The regulated fishing area of the Torrente Dolo extends from the section 1.5 kilometres upstream of the bridge of the SP 96 Villa Minozzo–Piandelagotti, through the section 1.5 kilometres downstream of the bridge, to the confluence with the Torrente Riaccio. This precise delineation is more important for your planning than a general classification of the watercourse: anyone wishing to fish there should take into account the designated section and the required special fishing permit.

Route through Villa Minozzo and Regional Cuisine

The park route from Castelnovo ne' Monti to Abetina Reale follows the SP 9 through Villa Minozzo towards Valle del Secchia. The route initially runs on asphalt and then continues along an unpaved road section. This section is open to traffic for around 10 kilometres and is suitable for horseback riding or mountain bike tours. This allows cultural attractions, mountain landscapes and active pursuits to be given different priorities when planning a trip. Traditional cuisine in Villa Minozzo includes gnocco fritto with cold cuts and cheese, erbazzone, cappelletti, potato or herb tortelli, as well as recipes featuring Parmigiano Reggiano, game, chestnuts and porcini mushrooms. Ingredients from the surrounding area are often used for these dishes.
