Montefiore Conca combines a distinctive medieval townscape with an elevated position above the Valconca. In the village, the houses cluster around the castle; the historic center is enclosed in a semicircle by walls and ancient towers. The Rocca di Montefiore Conca stands on a promontory. On clear days, the view stretches along the coast from Fano to Ravenna. The village itself is also situated on one of the highest hilltops in the Valconca, offering expansive views of the coast and the lower valley.

Churches and Art in the Historic Town

Those interested in architecture and sacred art will find several distinct points of interest in the historic center. The parish church of San Paolo dates back to the 12th century. Its elegant white-stone portal dates from the late 13th century. The high altar features a panel depicting the Madonna della Misericordia and Saints, recently attributed to Bernardino Dolci.

The Chiesa dell’Ospedale della Misericordia was built between 1470 and 1474 as part of a small hospice for pilgrims. Inside, it preserves a recently restored fresco cycle attributed to Bernardino Dolci or his workshop. Another historic landmark is the Santuario della Madonna di Bonora. It traces its origins to the hermit Ondidei di Bonora, who, in his will drawn up in 1409, bequeathed his possessions and the cell containing the image of the Madonna del Latte to the Franciscan Tertiaries.

Festivals with Religious, Cultural and Culinary Character

Throughout the year, events give Montefiore Conca a distinctive rhythm at different times. For centuries, Good Friday has been marked by a dramatic procession featuring hooded members of the confraternities, Simon of Cyrene carrying the cross, Roman soldiers and angels. Rocca di Luna takes place every year during the week of the July full moon as a three-day festival featuring theater, music, poetry, art and entertainment.

In autumn, local food culture takes center stage: a chestnut festival is held every Sunday in October. It features chestnuts prepared in various ways, a food market, music, dancing, performances and wine. This seasonal experience is complemented by the production of olive oil, for which Montefiore Conca is known. The oil is considered robust and full-flavored.

Walks, Trails and the Big Bench

Numerous hiking and mountain-biking trails lead from Montefiore Conca through the surrounding cultural landscape, with both wild and cultivated areas. For a shorter route, a short walking path runs along the walls of the village. Near Porta Nova, the path climbs up to the park, which can also be reached from below the Rocca.

A specific destination for an outing is Big Bench #310. It can be reached from Via Forca in Montefiore Conca via an approximately 700-meter footpath on CAI 043 or CAI 043A. From the bench, the view extends across the Valconca and the Romagna Riviera. This makes it possible to combine a historic town visit, landscapes and physical activity without equating the different places and trails.
