Archaeology in the historic town centre
The Museo Archeologico is housed in the Sant’Agostino convent in the heart of Verucchio’s medieval town centre. It presents archaeological objects from Verucchio’s Early Iron Age, dating from the 9th to the 7th century BC. The museum therefore gives you a concrete insight into the town’s early history.
The Pian del Monte archaeological area includes settlement traces and architectural structures from an ancient settlement. Its continuity extends from the 9th to the end of the 4th century BC. The Casa Etrusca, a square building from the 5th to the 4th century BC, also stands on the same site. These two remains make Pian del Monte particularly interesting if you would like to explore settlement history not only in a museum, but also through tangible architectural structures.
Medieval fortifications and expansive views
The Porta di Sant’Agostino is one of the four medieval gates of Verucchio’s original citadel, fortified by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta. Another defining complex is the Rocca Malatestiana: Sigismondo Malatesta had it built in 1449. It is one of the largest and best-preserved Malatesta fortifications. Here, history becomes tangible not only through individual dates, but also through preserved architecture.
From the Rocca Malatestiana, the view extends from the Adriatic Sea to the highest peaks of the Apennine ridge. The Scala della Rocca is also significant for exploring the area on foot. This staircase leads from Parco 9 Martiri to Rocca del Sasso. Both places give your sightseeing a clear spatial orientation, without implying anything about the distance or level of difficulty.
Art and guided insights
The Pinacoteca Comunale Verucchio houses around 200 works. These include paintings, drawings and prints covering the art history of the 20th century. Artists represented include Lucio Fontana, Emilio Vedova, Capogrossi, Leoncillo, Azuma, Borella, Cossovel, Pace, Reggiani, Alviani, Guerrieri, Drei, Bompadre, Di Vito, Vasarely, Rosai, Corsi, Dottori, Minarini and Pazzini. There is also a small lithograph attributed to Pablo Picasso.
The Pinacoteca Comunale Verucchio organises guided tours for the public. If you prefer to view the works with additional context, you can therefore combine your museum visit with such a tour. The Chiesa Collegiata also preserves a canvas by Centino; this individual artistic reference likewise adds to Verucchio’s cultural profile.
