Ternova Piccola: Karst, Culture and Historic Paths

Ternova Piccola showcases a distinctive karst landscape where rural architecture, votive markers and historical traces come together to create a varied village character. The Pozzo a ENE di Ternova Piccola is also connected to the edge of the village by a clearly described sequence of directions. From the junction at the village exit, the access path follows the route to the Grotta di Ternovizza for 450 metres. The entrance to the Pozzo lies a few metres from the path at the foot of a small limestone wall and is clearly visible. This allows the route, destination and distinctive terrain features to be considered together directly when planning your visit, without equating the two caves.

Paths for Different Travel Interests

The Gemina Route through Ternova is an unpaved track. It can also be cycled or ridden on horseback. This means the route appeals not only to walkers, but can also be incorporated into a trip in which you wish to experience the surroundings on two wheels or from horseback. The nature of the track remains an important part of your personal planning.

The path to the Castelliere di Ternova Piccola leads from the village via the road heading east. Along the way, there are three turn-offs, and you must turn left at each one. If you prefer to combine visits to historical sites with a route, this destination provides a suitable focus for planning your day.

Culture in a Historic House

The Centro d’arte e cultura Skerk – Umetniški in kulturni center is housed in a manor house in Ternova dating from 1857. The centre is also known as Casa Skerk and has hosted exhibitions by internationally established painters. Casa Skerk has been restored, while the building’s original karst elements were preserved.

For visitors interested in culture, Ternova Piccola therefore offers several different points of interest: typical karst houses and votive markers in the village landscape, the Centro d’arte e cultura Skerk in a manor house dating from 1857, and archaeological traces in the surrounding area. The archaeological site near Ternova Piccola is designated as a Castelliere settlement. According to Marchesetti, the Castelliere di Ternova Piccola was protected by a single fortification wall approximately 380 metres long.
