Buja between archaeology and landscape

Buja can be explored through several themes. At Monte di Buia, the chronology of a multi-layered archaeological settlement site extends from the Neolithic to the Renaissance. Added to this are the Museo d'Arte della Medaglia e della Città di Buja, the Pieve di San Lorenzo in Monte, the hills of Buja and a cycling circuit. Archaeological layers of time at Monte di Buia

Monte di Buia is a multi-layered archaeological settlement site. Its chronology extends from the Neolithic to the Renaissance, thereby spanning a long period of time. The history of the site cannot be reduced to a single era: the Neolithic, later developments and the Renaissance all belong to the same sequence.

The structure and some finds from the Castelliere di Vals at Monte di Buia suggest a tentative dating to the Bronze Age. Future archaeological research could refine the dating.

Museum and Pieve in their historical setting

The historical section of the Museo d'Arte della Medaglia e della Città di Buja contains archaeological finds from various periods. They illustrate the historical development of Buja. A separate section of the museum is dedicated to medal art, establishing another cultural focus.

The Museo d'Arte della Medaglia e della Città di Buja is located in the historic Borgo San Lorenzo in Monte, near a thousand-year-old Pieve.

The Pieve di San Lorenzo in Monte has the floor plan of a Latin cross. It was partially destroyed by the 1976 earthquake; restoration was completed in 2002.

Hills, mountains and river landscape

The mountains Monte Pedroz and Monte Ragogna are located in the surroundings of Buja. Both extend the view beyond the cultural sites to the landscape of the immediate area. The two mountains thus complement the landscape connections around Buja.

In the Buja area, a river passes through a section of considerable natural-historical interest and high scenic quality; its winding course is lined with forests of black alder, ash and black poplar, creating a humid natural setting.

Cycling through the hills

The Osoppo and Gemona Plain cycle circuit (R034) leads through the hills of Buja and runs along minor roads with light traffic. Alongside archaeology, the museum and the Pieve, this provides a specific cycling route as a separate way to experience the landscape. In Buja, travel planning can therefore be shaped both by cultural history and by a cycling tour.
