Enemonzo: Nature, Sacred Buildings and Cheese Tradition

Enemonzo combines landscapes, nature trails, geological features, sacred buildings and a local dairy tradition. Churches and chapels can be found in Colza, Enemonzo and Maiaso; these are complemented by the Spisulon Waterfall and the Carnic Hills Intermunicipal Park. The sacred buildings include the Church of San Giorgio, the Chapel of S. Rocco and the Parish Church of S. Nicolò.

Nature and trails around Enemonzo

The Carnic Hills Intermunicipal Park covers 685 hectares within the municipality of Enemonzo and has a network of trails and nature routes with high biodiversity. At the park’s strategic point in the green plain of Enemonzo, there is a large car park.

Around the Spisulon Waterfall, the area is characterised by sedimentary rock formations, especially limestone and dolomite. The rocks contain fossils and remains of former marine organisms. At Spisulon, the waterfall and geology come together: the area includes limestone, dolomite, fossils and remains of former marine organisms.

From Quinis di Enemonzo, a comfortable approach lasting approximately 30 minutes leads to the waterfall via a wide, compact gravel road; the dry riverbed of the Tagliamento is crossed along the way. For planning the day, the approximate duration, the starting point at Quinis di Enemonzo, the wide gravel road and the crossing of the dry riverbed are relevant for this approach. Another route, “Villa Santina Pinewood – Enemonzo Plateau”, is mostly flat and crosses two fords.

Culture between Colza, Enemonzo and Maiaso

The Church of San Giorgio in Colza dates back to the 15th century. In Enemonzo, the Church of Beata Vergine della Consolazione was rebuilt in 1706; the Chapel of S. Rocco was built in the 16th century following a plague epidemic. The altarpiece of S. Salandino from 1596, depicting Saint Roch, is located in this chapel. In Maiaso, the Parish Church of S. Nicolò has a soft-stone altarpiece dating from 1376.

The permanent exhibition “Segni del tempo” was opened on 28 July 2018 in the premises of the former primary school in Colza di Enemonzo. The exhibition is located in Colza, and therefore in the same place as the Church of San Giorgio.

Cheese, ricotta and local cuisine

Caseificio Val Tagliamento produces the cheeses Cuor di Carnia, Latteria Enemonzo and Montasio DOP PDM. Only milk is used for all three varieties. It is supplied by members of the Caseificio from the valleys and mountain pastures of the Carnic Alps. Typical cuisine is offered at the “Mostra Mercato del Formaggio e della Ricotta di Malga”. The event celebrates a centuries-old tradition of alpine cheese and ricotta. In Enemonzo, cheeses, alpine cheese, ricotta and typical cuisine are therefore presented side by side.
