Churches as historical points of reference
The church of Sant’Odorico was mentioned on 20 October 1154 as a monastery or a regular foundation of Augustinian Canons under the direction of an abbot, and later became an abbey church. This combination of a precisely dated historical reference and the later development into an abbey church makes Sant’Odorico an important subject for visitors who wish to approach Flaibano through its architectural and ecclesiastical history.
The rural church of San Giovanni Battista is dedicated to the Italian Alpini. After the damage caused by the 1976 earthquake, the Alpini restored the building and erected an Alpini monument in front of it. The present appearance of the rural church of San Giovanni Battista in Sottoselva dates back to the 16th century. Inside, it also preserves an altar attributed to Carlo da Carona, the only surviving one of three 16th-century altars.
The parish church of Beata Vergine Annunziata also offers its own historical perspective. It was almost completely rebuilt between 1922 and 1933. Its side portal was created by Giovanni Antonio Pilacorte and is decorated with sixteen different angel faces. Cycling routes with different itineraries
“Castellieri in bicicletta” is a cycling tour to the castellieri of Flaibano and its surroundings. The route therefore focuses on the prehistoric settlements explicitly associated, in the tour’s name, with Flaibano and the surrounding area. For your planning, this offers a different perspective from a simple tour of the town: the itinerary also includes the surrounding area.
The “The Stone Houses cycle circuit” leads from Codroipo towards San Lorenzo–Coderno and Flaibano. On the return journey, it passes through Sant’Odorico, Turrida and Gradisca before returning to Codroipo. The two cycling routes therefore differ in their spatial layout: while “Castellieri in bicicletta” names Flaibano and its surroundings as the destination of the tour, the circuit describes a route starting and ending in Codroipo, with several stops along the way.
Landscape, music and a visitor attraction
Montagnola is considered a mountain and is located in the area around Flaibano. This adds a landscape theme to the historic churches and cycling routes. Concerts take place in the park in front of the villa during the summer season. In addition, the “Prati di Coz” Educational Park, with its visitor offering, is associated with Flaibano as a stop. Nature, music and an educational visitor attraction thus expand the possibilities for experiencing the town through different interests.
Visiting Sant’Odorico
Visits to the church of Sant’Odorico are scheduled for Thursdays from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. and Sundays from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m., as well as by telephone appointment.
