Osoppo between Fort History and Nature
Osoppo combines impressive traces of the past with botanical diversity and easy paths through different landscapes. The main attractions are Osoppo Fort, the new Museo della Fortezza, the Orto Botanico Osoppo and the natural habitats of the Sorgive di Bars. Fort, Church and Border Culture
Osoppo Fort was declared a national monument in 1923. At the fort, you can see remains from the First World War and earlier centuries. The history of the area ranges from military events to the broader development of the region: the new Museo della Fortezza tells its story from prehistoric times through the Risorgimento to the First World War, conveying a sense of identity and border culture.
At Osoppo Fort, the Friulians from the surrounding area drove out the imperial garrisons stationed there and resisted their counteroffensive for almost seven months, until October. Also on the Colle di Osoppo stands the Chiesa di San Pietro, near the fort, on the site of an earlier early Christian basilica.
Botanical Diversity and Special Landscapes
The Orto Botanico Osoppo comprises more than 300 botanical species. The site also includes an open-air museum with old agricultural equipment.
A different landscape can be seen at the Sorgive di Bars. It can be explored on an easy circular route through a great variety of natural habitats. The Sorgiva di Bars is a wetland with marshy meadows and hygrophilous forests, interspersed with steppe-like Magredi landscapes. The green landscapes of Osoppo are ideal for walks and cycling excursions; the routes almost always run across flat terrain.
The Anello del Colle di Osoppo is an easy 5.1-kilometre circular route that takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes. It passes through Parco del Rivellino and follows Sentiero CAI 720. Along the way, the circular route offers views of the Tagliamento and the Prealpi Carniche.
Orchid Festival and Regional Cuisine
The Festa delle Orchidee takes place in the streets of Osoppo's historic centre and in the natural areas where numerous orchid species grow wild. Every year, the festival includes guided excursions during the peak flowering period. The festival is complemented by typical dishes and an enogastronomic offering.
