San Bernardino Verbano: Nature Trails and Historic Sites

San Bernardino Verbano combines a landscape shaped by Val Grande National Park with trails through forests, views of two lakes, and a remarkable concentration of historic buildings. Also in Bieno is the Oratorio di Sant'Antonio da Padova, a rural oratory dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. The Santuario della Madonna del Patrocinio, also known as Santa Maria del Calcare, stands along the old mule track that led from Bieno and Santino to the alpine pastures of Ompio. The sanctuary was built at the beginning of the 18th century.

Rovegro also contributes to the area's historical diversity. The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Gaudenzio dates from the 16th or 17th century and was renovated and extended in the 19th century. Rovegro is also home to a house known as the “casa del castellano”, preserved from 1553. A bridge known as the “ponte romano” crosses the San Bernardino stream along the mule track between Rovegro and Cossogno.

The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Sant'Antonio Abate is the only three-nave church in the area. Together with the rural buildings that define the alpine pastures and old village centres of San Bernardino Verbano, as well as the dry-stone walls supporting the mule tracks in the mountain hamlets, it creates a vivid picture of the region's architectural heritage.
