Mozzio: Historic Sanctuaries, Fountains and Trails in the Antigorio Valley

Mozzio, together with Viceno and Cravegna, is situated on two sunny panoramic balconies of the larger orographic terrace of the Antigorio Valley. The three villages are connected by a panoramic road that ends in Maglioggio on the opposite side of the valley. This gives Mozzio a clearly defined setting within an environment where historic buildings, small village details and trails through the mountain landscape come together.

Historic Places in the Village and in Smeglio

In the upper part of Mozzio stands the Oratorio di San Giuseppe. The oratory is a building dating from the early 18th century and houses an almost life-size crucifix as well as a signed painting of the death of Saint Joseph from 1787. Here, the architecture and furnishings are closely connected, giving the visit a tangible historical context.

Another religious site is located in Mozzio's hamlet of Smeglio: the Santuario della Madonna della Vita is a 17th-century sanctuary. The sanctuary contains frescoes by the Borgnis family. Mozzio itself is also home to the Chiesa di San Giacomo, meaning that the local churches and sanctuaries are not limited to a single building.

The village's distinctive appearance also includes eight stone-built fountains. They were created around 1800 and add a historical note that differs from the older ecclesiastical buildings. The Giro delle frazioni di Crodo is relevant for combining local history with physical activity. The route is classified as easy and follows mule tracks or well-maintained paths. It leads as far as the center of Mozzio: it first follows a mule track and then a short section of road. This combination makes the route an appealing, clearly described part of trip planning without requiring a more demanding mountain hike.
