Baveno between Granite and Lakeside

Baveno combines the history of pink granite with a long lakeside promenade, historic religious buildings and paths that bring together culture, landscape and former working environments. For planning purposes, these highlights can be linked to specific places: the lakeside, the historic town center, the religious buildings and the Sentiero dei Picasass.

Granite, Churches and Local History

The Museo GranUM is a multimedia information center dedicated to Baveno’s pink granite and its historical and economic significance for the Baveno area. It is open daily from April 1 to September 30, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; from October 1 to March 31, it is open Monday to Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and additionally on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The Battistero di Baveno has a square exterior floor plan, an octagonal interior and a 17th-century vestibule with granite columns. According to more recent studies, its origins date back to the 5th century; the drum and vault feature frescoes from the early 16th century. The Chiesa dei Santi Gervaso e Protaso contains 15th-century frescoes as well as 16th-century works attributed to Defendente Ferrari and Camillo Procaccini.

The Passeggiata Storico-Archeologica runs through the area of the monumental complex of the Chiesa dei Santi Gervaso e Protaso and offers insights into Baveno as it was around 2,000 years ago. A Roman inscription dedicated to Emperor Claudius (41–54 AD) can be seen on the church façade. Two multisensory panels about the complex and the Romanesque church are intended to make the historical and art-historical evidence more accessible to people with visual impairments and blind people. The Museo GranUM takes part in the cultural events series “La pietra racconta,” which has reached its tenth edition.

Lakeside Paths and Excursions

The Lungolago di Baveno is more than 1.4 kilometers long and offers views across the Golfo Borromeo as far as Laveno. From the lakeside promenade, you can head inland to the park of Villa Fedora; via the town streets, you can reach the historic town center and the Chiesa dei Santi Gervaso e Protaso. The villas route can be explored on foot along the lakeside or by boat along the shore, offering views of 19th- and 20th-century villas with English parks and richly diverse exotic gardens. Villa Fedora is a residence built in the first half of the 19th century.

The Sentiero dei Picasass in Oltrefiume di Baveno is an open-air extension of the Museo GranUM. It includes a landscape installation created in 2018 about the lives and work of the granite quarry workers and stonecutters known in the local dialect as “Picasass,” as well as traces of former extraction activities in disused quarries. The trail leads to the entrance to the Via Ferrata dei Picasass and, according to its description, is considered easily accessible even for inexperienced hikers. The via ferrata is rated EEA PD, takes about two hours and has an elevation gain of 320 meters. A cycling route from Baveno via Feriolo to the Fondotoce nature reserve runs through Feriolo.

Getting There and Local Flavors

Baveno has a station on the international Milan–Domodossola railway line, served by regional and interregional trains. Traditional Baveno cuisine includes lake fish dishes and rice, including whitefish, perch and trout, as well as fried bleak. Other specialties come from the mountainous hinterland, such as mushrooms, chestnuts and traditionally produced cheeses.
