Tronzano Lago Maggiore: Lakeside Views, Trails and Local History

Tronzano Lago Maggiore combines a high lakeside location with wooded trails and a local history made visible through churches, archaeological traces and preserved objects from former working life. Between Lake Maggiore and Monte Borgna

Tronzano Lago Maggiore lies on the Lombard shore of Lake Maggiore, on a slope about 350 metres above the Verbano and below Monte Borgna. The municipality covers around 11 square kilometres and extends from the lake at approximately 193 metres to Monte Borgna at about 1,160 metres. This results in an elevation difference of approximately 1,000 metres, which defines the character of the landscape. The churchyard of Santa Maria Assunta stands on a promontory and offers views over Lake Maggiore towards the Canton of Ticino and the Brissago Islands.

Lago Delio is a suitable destination for a tour into the higher landscape. The small lake is of glacial origin and lies between Monte Borgna, at 1,157 metres, and Monte Cadrigna, at 1,300 metres. From the centre of Tronzano, you can climb to Lago Delio. The lake can also be reached by a drivable road from Maccagno via Campagnano and Musignano. This provides different access routes to the same natural area for planning your trip, without the trails having the same length or following the same course.

Hiking Trails with Different Impressions

The wooded area around Tronzano is suitable for trekking. A circular trail leads to Ronco Scigolino and returns to the centre of Tronzano via Poggio; the trail is accessible to everyone. On the “Lago Maggiore e ritorno” circular trail, the return route follows an old, carefully paved mule track through forests and meadows. Alongside the natural experience, such historic trail surfaces give these hikes a distinct local character.

The “Al Lago Delio dalla Mora” trail begins in front of the Chiesa di San Sebastiano in Bassano. It initially follows a paved mule track, which becomes a path after about three kilometres; the trail then climbs to Lago Delio. Another connection leads from Bassano to the Santa Maria Assunta church along a comfortable, level and shaded forest road. For planning your day, you can therefore choose between a climb to the lake, a circular trail returning to the village centre and a quieter section through the forest.

The circular trail via Ronco Scigolino and Poggio offers broad views of Lake Maggiore, the Castelli di Cannero, Cannobio and its valley, and farther north towards Monte Limidario, at 2,187 metres. The views thus extend from the lake and its island and shoreline landscapes to the mountains farther north. Those looking for historical traces as well as elevation gains along the way will find a prehistoric sanctuary in the village of Crocetta, on the trail from Bassano via the Chiesetta della Mora to Lago Delio. An anthropomorphic cross depiction is carved into a rocky outcrop there; there are also further archaeological finds.

Churches, Museum and Traces of Earlier Everyday Life

Different layers of history can also be connected within the village itself. The still-visible “pile dell'orzo” consist of worked stone blocks that were used to remove the husks from barley. The present parish church of Tronzano was originally a small oratory that may have been built on the occasion of a plague. From 1540 until the middle of the 17th century, the Disciplinati worked in the village as stonemasons and were probably the builders of the oratory.
