Castello Cabiaglio: Stone Village, Forest and Torbiera del Carecc

Castello Cabiaglio is located in Campo dei Fiori Regional Park, surrounded by beech and chestnut forests. At the same time, part of the old rural stone village with its narrow arcaded lanes has been preserved. In Italian, the regional park is called Parco Regionale Campo dei Fiori.

Forest, Meadows and Moorland

A special connection with nature leads to the Riserva Naturale Orientata della Torbiera del Carecc. It is home to numerous amphibians, including the crested newt, the pool frog and many salamanders. Several specimens of the rare Lataste’s frog have also been observed there. The Torbiera is surrounded by meadows and beech forests; plants growing in the moorland include marsh marigold, water iris, dark columbine and lesser gentian. Village History and Roman Finds

Churches and Art in the Village

The Chiesa di Sant’Appiano has Baroque interiors featuring paintings, stucco and illusionistic architectural decorations by the painter Giovan Battista Ronchelli. The Oratorio, or the deconsecrated Chiesa sconsacrata di San Carlo, houses a valuable carved wooden altar and a painting from 1646 by the painter Miradori, who came from Cremona and was known by the nickname il Genovesino. Trails to Nature and Religious Destinations

The Oratorio della Beata Vergine del Ronchetto can be reached via a Stations of the Cross route, the Via Crucis. A branch of Sentiero 10B/310B follows a level path approximately 1 kilometre long along the Torbiera del Carecc, passes a small cascade and joins the SP45 shortly before Castello Cabiaglio. Trail No. 3 also ends at the junction with the SP45. Before the centre of Castello Cabiaglio, you can reach the Riserva Naturale Orientata “Torbiera del Carecc” from there by turning left and following the provincial road for a few hundred metres. For planning your day, the approximately 1-kilometre-long, level section can be considered a separate walking stage; the small cascade lies along its route.
