Amaseno: Historic Heritage, Mountain Valleys and Regional Culture

Amaseno combines a historic townscape with religious traditions, mountain landscapes and regional cuisine. The historic center is surrounded by walls with towers and five gates; within this framework lies a network of narrow alleyways.

Churches, Fortresses and Testimonies of the Past

The Castello dei De Ceccano was fortified in 1200 by the Counts De Ceccano. The Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta is a national monument and was built by Cistercians at the end of the 12th century.

The Santuario Madonna dell’Auricola was also built in 1200 by Cistercians on the hill of the same name. The Ponte Sant’Aneglio is a round-arch bridge dating from 314 BC in the hamlet of Selvina. It once connected the abbeys of Fossanova and Valvisciolo.

The Chiesa dell’Annunziata also contains a movable, animated nativity scene.

Museums and Accessibility

The Museum of Amaseno preserves panel paintings, paintings, sculptures and medieval parchments relating to the history and religious life of Amaseno. The Museo Civico e Diocesano Castrum Sancti Laurentii is accessible to people with disabilities. The restoration of Santa Maria dell’Auricola included a new exterior ramp that enables people with disabilities to access the building. Accessibility therefore concerns both a museum and a specific structural measure at Santa Maria dell’Auricola.

Religious Traditions Throughout the Year

Every year on August 10, Amaseno repeats the ritual of the miraculous liquefaction of the blood of Saint Lawrence. In the Chiesa Madonna delle Grazie, the Rosary is prayed every afternoon during the month dedicated to Mary. Both customs are among the religious references that are firmly rooted in Amaseno throughout the year.

Mountain Landscape and Townscape

The mountainous areas of Amaseno include smaller valleys at elevations of approximately 700 to 1,090 meters. Elevation is one of the specific planning factors for an individual trip through this landscape. Anyone including the mountainous areas in their itinerary should keep the range of elevations in mind.

Buffalo Cuisine and a Summer Festival

Amaseno’s traditional cuisine includes, among other things, dishes made with Bufaletto meat. The “I love Bufala” festival takes place on the last weekend of July. During the festival, visitors can tour cheese dairies and buffalo farms in the region. When planning a trip around the festival, the last weekend of July is therefore the specific date to keep in mind for this regional focus.

Getting to Amaseno

For road travel to Amaseno, the Frosinone motorway exit from Rome and the Ceprano motorway exit from Naples serve as reference points. Anyone arriving from either of these two directions can use the respective exit as a landmark for the road journey.
