Between Urban History and Nature Experiences

Frosinone combines archaeological insights, medieval buildings and protected landscapes. Guided tours of the exhibition rooms are offered at the Museo Archeologico di Frosinone. The prehistoric section documents human traces in the Frosinone area from the Lower Paleolithic, dating back approximately 250,000 years. The museum also displays archaeological finds from Frosinone and other centers in the province, including mainly ceramics, weapons and personal jewelry dating to the period associated with the first historical references to the Volsci in Latium.

The Roman Amphitheatre of Frosinone was built in the 1st or 2nd century AD. Ferentino has significant remains of megalithic walls. Anagni is associated with the so-called Outrage of Anagni in 1303, when Philip IV of France humiliated Boniface VIII.

In Fumone, the Rocca Longhi De-Paolis served as Celestine V's prison and was the place of his death. The hanging garden of the Rocca is considered the highest in Europe and is located at an altitude of 800 meters. Also situated at an altitude of 800 meters is the Certosa di Trisulti, a monastic complex and national monument. It includes the medieval façade of the Palazzo di Innocenzo III, which now houses an important library, as well as the neoclassical façade of the church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Saint Bartholomew and Saint Bruno.

The Abbazia di Casamari is one of the most significant surviving examples of Gothic Cistercian architecture. In Isola del Liri, the historic center developed in the Middle Ages at the foot of the 27-meter-high Cascata Grande. The function of Castello Boncompagni Viscogliosi as a guardian of the Piana di Sora can be traced back to the 11th century. At the castle, the Liri divides into two branches, which form the Cascata Grande, also known as Cascata Verticale, and the Cascata del Valcatoio in the historic center of Isola del Liri.

Another focal point is Lago di Canterno, the largest karst lake in Latium. The lake is surrounded by gently rolling countryside with oak forests and other woodland formations and is protected by the Riserva Naturale of the same name. Grey herons, purple herons, little egrets, moorhens and great crested grebes are found in this wetland. The unpaved paths along the shores can be used on foot and by bicycle.

The Riserva Naturale di Posta Fibreno is also one of the nature-oriented excursion destinations. It covers 345 hectares and is suitable for outings in a scenic setting. A publication about the province of Frosinone describes a series of 15 weekend ideas extending from north to south of the province. The range includes outings on foot, by mountain bike and on horseback, as well as trekking and religious routes; these include the Cammino di San Benedetto and the Francigena del Sud.

On Shrove Tuesday, Frosinone celebrates the ancient Festa della Radeca, the local Carnival tradition Carnuale Nostre. In recent years, it has shown clear signs of revival.
