Ripi combines the character of a Ciociarian village with visible traces of the Castrum, a church, historic palazzi and its Roman past. The town lies on a hill between vineyards and olive groves. In its historic centre, Ripi preserves the overall layout of the ancient Castrum; it includes the two old access gates, Porta Santa Croce and Porta Sant’Angelo. The town can therefore be experienced through its built heritage and landscape at the same time.

Porta Santa Croce has been preserved as an access gate and faces south-west towards the ancient Via Latina, now Via Casilina. Porta Sant’Angelo has been preserved as an access gate and points towards Veroli. Palazzo Galloni rises above Porta Santa Croce; its walls were restored in 1781. The Bersagliere Luciano Manara stayed at Palazzo Candia in May 1849.

Along the two thoroughfares in the historic centre, well-preserved portal decorations on residential buildings and workshops can be seen; they are of remarkable artistic interest. The Chiesa Arcipretale del SS. Salvatore has stood in the centre of Ripi since 1743, above an earlier church. Remains of the castle walls are still visible. The archaeological finds at San Silvestro bear witness to the rule of the ancient Romans.

Museum and insights into local history

The Museo dell’Energia di Ripi was created by restoring an old public washhouse. It combines an educational laboratory with a geological museum and a science museum. A museum visit can be supplemented by a short guided excursion to the Miniera di Ripi in the Le Petroglie district. In Ripi, both the town’s architectural development and scientific topics therefore take centre stage.

Woodland landscape between Ripi and Ceprano

The Macchia di Ripi is an extensive woodland area stretching across the municipalities of Ripi and Ceprano. It is a deciduous oak forest dominated by Turkey oaks (Quercus cerris L.) and Italian downy oaks (Q. frainetto Ten.). Together with the hilly setting between vineyards and olive groves, this creates a landscape that complements the historic centre with a distinctly natural side.

Pilgrimage destination and festivals throughout the year

The Santa Maria Succurre Miseris sanctuary on Colle Santa Maria is a destination for many pilgrims. The Madonna Succurre Miseris festival takes place at the church of the same name on Easter Monday. On 23 April, the Palio di San Giorgio is also celebrated with traditional games such as sack races, tug-of-war, and other skill-based and competitive games. Those who visit Ripi can therefore get to know the town not only through its walls and museums, but also through religious traditions and community events.
