Casalvieri: Old Town, Archaeology and Landscape

Casalvieri combines a characterful old town with archaeological remains, religious art and a varied landscape. The votive offerings were discovered in a votive pit in the Pescarola di Casalvieri district.

Archaeology, Pilgrimage and Local Traditions

The archaeological site of Pescarola preserves the remains of an Italic sanctuary and a Roman thermal building. Pilgrims used the latter for bathing and making votive offerings. The finds from the sanctuary date from the 7th to the 2nd century BC and include, among other things, weapons, coins, fertility offerings, anatomical votive offerings, masks and statuettes. Another testament to the past is La Pietra Scritta, a stone inscription from the 1st century AD commemorating a road built at his own expense by Caio Pomponio Tigrano.

Monte Togna lies in a landscape with extensive woodland and centuries-old oak trees. From there, views extend across the entire Valle di Comino as well as parts of the Valle del Liri and Val Roveto. The Fossa carsica del Cavallo is a large sinkhole and is considered the most prominent karst phenomenon in the Casalvieri area.
