Patrica on a Steep Rocky Ridge
Patrica combines its compact town center with a striking mountain landscape. The built-up center lies on a steep rocky ridge of the Monti Lepini; the houses are separated from one another only by a dense network of narrow alleys. The historic portals made of the typical gray Patrica stone feature a characteristic element of the mountain village. The portals almost always bear elaborate decorations with enigmatic symbols. The town’s history also goes back a long way: Patrica is first documented in 817 in a deed of donation that mentions “CASTRUM PATRICIAE CUM TERRE ET CACUMINE”.
Monte Cacume and Trails through the Landscape
Monte Cacume has a conical cliff formation due to its distinctive geology. The trail to Monte Cacume begins in Patrica at a stone staircase at the exit of a tunnel. The mountain is also home to the “Sentiero di Dante”, an art trail with 12 Corten steel installations. They depict figures whom Dante encounters in the Divine Comedy. For natural-history impressions, there are 47 types of orchids, including hybrids and subspecies, especially the rare wild-growing Ophrys lacaitae.
Several trails allow visitors to experience the surroundings in different ways. The historic “Verdesca-Marotta” trail connected Contrada Tufo Varraccani Verdesca with Patrica’s historic center. Today, the trail has signs and interactive signage through which maps can be accessed via QR code. The Pedemontana connects Patrica with Giuliano di Roma and can be used on horseback or by bicycle from the “Padre Pio” bend. At the foot of the historic center stands the 3×2-meter Panchina dei Lepini, offering views across the Valle del Sacco. The Sentiero Natura covers about 5 hectares and lies within the Macchia Resignano.
Churches, Palazzo and the Chestnut Festival
The architectural history of Patrica includes the 13th-century Church of San Pietro. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; it also has a semicircular apse and eight chapels. Inside are a valuable wooden choir loft, a wooden choir, altarpieces and noteworthy paintings. The Church of San Giovanni Battista dates from 1760. Its Baroque façade features a limestone portal and a bas-relief of a lamb.
The Palazzo Spezza complex also makes its own distinctive contribution: it includes an Italian-style hanging garden and a nymphaeum inspired by France. A special combination of local culture and culinary enjoyment is showcased by the traditional chestnut festival “sagra dull’acquata i dulla callarosta”. It combines roasted chestnuts called “Camiselle” with a sweet, sparkling wine called “acquata”.
