Formia appeals to travellers who want to combine the coast, history and trails in the Monti Aurunci. A notable cultural landmark is Torre di Mola: it is located in Formia’s maritime district of the same name and is one of the few surviving structures of a castle built at the end of the 13th century by Charles II of Anjou, King of Naples. The maritime setting and medieval fortress architecture provide a clear starting point for exploration.

Landscape between Mountains and Gulf

The natural side includes the Gianola e Monte di Scauri protected area. It lies along the coastal strip separating the Monti Aurunci from the Gulf of Gaeta. If, alongside historical sites, you would also like to discover a landscape between mountains and sea, this coastal strip forms a distinct focal point.

Hiking Trails with Views over the Gulf of Gaeta

For hiking enthusiasts, the CAI 960 offers a clearly described mountain route: the trail runs from the Rifugio di Pornito to Cima del Redentore. It climbs the southern slope of Monte Altino and runs above the Gulf of Gaeta. Along the route lies Roccia Laolatra, an almost vertical wall of compact limestone that provides shelter for numerous kestrels and peregrine falcons. The CAI 960 also leads to the Chapel of San Michele, built into the rock. The summit of Monte Redentore is home to the statue of the same name; from there, the panoramic view extends across the Gulf of Gaeta.

Trekking and Spiritual Trail Sections

The Cammino di San Filippo Neri has a different focus. This 12 km trekking route of moderate difficulty leads from Maranola to Monte Redentore, through forests and past hermitages. It thus combines physical activity with a spiritual dimension and is particularly appealing if you want the experience of nature and religiously shaped places to go hand in hand.

Sant’Erasmo and the Long History of a Place

The Church of Sant’Erasmo also leads deep into Formia’s history. It stands on a site whose roots reach back to the first centuries of Christianity. A first place of worship was built at Sant’Erasmo’s burial site in the 6th century. Beneath the floor of the present church are complex masonry structures, architectural remains and an extensive burial ground. The burials from different periods attest to the site’s continuous use from late Roman times through the Middle Ages.

Roman Archaeology and Events

The Area Archeologica di Caposele preserves visible remains from Republican Rome’s later period. They are grouped around a roughly 500-square-metre trapezoidal area, whose perimeter is formed by four building structures associated with a wealthy suburban domus. The Area Archeologica di Caposele was built in the 1st century BC. More recently, an important open-air theatre space was also established there, hosting performances and outdoor events, including the “Festival del teatro classico”. This makes it possible to combine archaeological exploration and cultural events in one place.

Port and Travel Focus

Ferries to the Pontine Islands depart from Formia’s modern port. When choosing a hotel in Formia, you can therefore consider whether culture, mountain trails or a ferry trip to the Pontine Islands should be the main focus of your journey.
