Despite being built in the fully developed Baroque style, Chiesa San Giovanni Battista has a floor plan and façade that strongly reflect the 16th-century model. The church houses a Bambin Gesù statue. A devout Franciscan carved it from olive wood from Gethsemane in the 16th century. This gives you two distinct historical points of reference: the architecture of the church and the statue’s origins. The combination of stylistic language, material and religious tradition provides a concrete way to explore Italian architectural history through individual details.
A small rural church was built on the outskirts of Giulianello in 1616. It is dedicated to Madonna della Consolazione and is known as Madonnella. Palazzo Toruzzi is located in the area around Giulianello. Cardinal Antonio Maria Salviati completed the work, which included constructing Giulianello’s present historic palace. Giulianello therefore offers different historical points of reference: a church on the outskirts, a building in the surrounding area and the present historic palace.
Traditions and Dates Throughout the Year
On January 6, the Bambinello tradition is renewed in Giulianello: since 1798, the Bambin Gesù statue has been carried in a procession through the town’s main streets after the 10 a.m. Mass. The feast of San Giulianitto is celebrated in Giulianello every year on February 16. On this occasion, the local population gathers around tall blessed bundles of reeds and laurel known as matticelle. Route to Lago di Giulianello
The “Visitare Giulianello” route is relevant for navigating between the town and the lake. It covers 1 km in the town and a further 2.7 km to the lake. The drive to Lago di Giulianello leads from Giulianello along the SP3 toward Velletri; after about 1 km, an unpaved road branches off. From the barrier, it is another 700 m on foot to the lake. You can take the different sections of the route into account separately when planning your day. This allows you to set a suitable pace for the town walk, drive and hike according to your chosen priorities.
Folk Songs as Intangible Heritage
Another cultural tradition is Giulianello’s folk music. The songs are more than 1,000 years old and have been passed down from generation to generation. For more than 40 years, the Donne di Giulianello group has preserved this tradition. Alongside architecture and festivals, musical heritage is therefore another way to explore the town.
