Cultural history and urban architecture
Piana delle Orme is a theme park and museum complex dedicated to the 20th century, covering 50 years of Italian history. Two pavilions document the land reclamation of the Pontine Marshes carried out in the 1930s and the founding of the new towns. This makes the development of the area tangible through a clearly defined historical period.
The Museo della Terra Pontina displays around one thousand exhibits and presents the history of the Pontine area in the 20th century. Its chronological scope ranges from the period before the land reclamation through the agricultural transformation of the Agro Pontino to its settlement. For visitors interested in culture, this offers a distinct approach to regional history that complements the themes of Piana delle Orme.
Latina’s buildings also tell the story of the period in which they were created. The former Opera Balilla building, which now houses the Museo Civico Duilio Cambellotti, was designed in 1932 by architect Oriolo Frezzotti. The Torre Civica is 32 meters high and offers panoramic views over the city. Palazzo M is considered an emblematic example of Latina’s rationalist architecture and is shaped like the initial letter M.
Coastal dunes, lakes, and wetlands
Within the municipality of Latina, the Parco Nazionale del Circeo includes the coastal dune section between Capo Portiere and Rio Martino. Lago di Fogliano is a brackish lake in the Parco Nazionale del Circeo and the largest brackish lake in the Pontine province. The coast and lake thus represent two different landscape features within the natural environment.
The wetland system of Fogliano, Monaci, Caprolace, and Pantani dell’Inferno includes numerous habitats of community interest. These include coastal lagoons as well as freshwater and brackish-water wetlands. Anyone interested in natural interrelationships will find a landscape here where different aquatic habitats coexist side by side.
The Borgo di Fogliano consists of a complex of historic buildings constructed at the end of the 18th century. The Borgo di Fogliano contains an ornithological museum as well as an environmental education center or laboratory dedicated to the wetlands. A tour there can only be taken after making a reservation with the park administration in advance. The botanical garden in the Borgo di Fogliano was stocked by the Caetani family with numerous plant species from different parts of the world.
Regional flavors
The Kiwi IGP di Latina is known as a kiwi with emerald-green flesh and a sweet-and-sour taste. The Sagra del Kiwi is associated with the month of December. This regional specialty thus complements the historical, architectural, and landscape features that characterize Latina.
