Monuments and Museums
The historic centre of Fondi includes important monuments from pre-Roman, Roman and medieval times. The Duomo di San Pietro was built in the 12th century on ancient pre-Roman structures. The Chiesa di San Francesco and its associated monastery were built in 1363. These buildings show how different periods come together in the cityscape, without Fondi being confined to a single historical period.
Castello Caetani stands directly along the course of Fondi's ancient walls and houses the “8 Ottobre” Archaeological Civic Museum. Another cultural point of interest is the Museo Archeologico città di Fondi. It has four exhibition halls covering the history of the area from the earliest periods through the Middle Ages. Today, the museum preserves around 400 artefacts from excavations and discoveries throughout the municipality of Fondi. The director Giuseppe de Santis, who was born in Fondi, shot the film “Giorni d’amore” in the southern Pontine area. This connection with film adds a cinematic perspective to the historical themes, while also linking them to Fondi and the southern Pontine area.
